Internships

Internships are one way to gain experience related to your career interests while still in school.

Most students participate in internships during the semester, but there are also internships during the semester that become available and will be posted through our jobs listserv.  An internship may be full or part time, and either paid or unpaid, but you do not receive college credit for the experience.

Below is a current list of internships available to SILS students. Most recent internships are listed at the top. It is by no means exhaustive. Use the menu to the right to navigate. Questions and information about internships can be directed to Lori Haight, Career Services Coordinator for SILS.

Have you participated in an internship while a SILS student?  If so, please complete our brief Internship survey so we can record your experience. Thank you!

Must be able balance independent work with constructive feedback and direction from supervisor and possible testers. Deadline: This would be a great summer projects, but could also be completed in the early fall. We would very much like this done by mid-September so that it can be a part of our site’s 9th birthday celebration. Credit: Class credit may be available by arrangement. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Qualifications: The intern must be an enrolled student during the internship term. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable. Ideal candidates have an interest in human rights work, current events, archives, and preservation. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, and some knowledge or experience using video production tools and/or working in a library or archive environment is a plus.

Applicants who are offered an internship, but who are not US permanent residents, US citizens, or in possession of a valid student visa, must apply for a J-1 visa through a sponsoring organization. This process can take several weeks and applicants will have to incur their own costs.

How to Apply: Please apply immediately by sending a letter of interest, resume, and two names or letters of reference (no calls or email inquiries, please) to commsinternships@hrw.org.  Please use “Archives Intern” as the subject of your email.  Only complete applications will be reviewed.

There's a strong case for this model from an environmental standpoint (using Cherokee's expertise in cleaning up brownfields), an energy standpoint (the distributed microgrid system is becoming increasingly important), and a land use perspective. We have the flexibility to be creative with the land not taken up by the infrastructure (think parks, electric vehicle charging stations, etc.).
Use your GIS education in the real world this summer! We need to overlay a number of different data sets (brownfields, cell tower demand, etc.) to help us identify potential sites, and the internship will involve creating this mapping system. You must be a self-starter and proficient in some type of GIS software. Since you will be designing our mapping system from scratch, we have flexibility about which software you use. The start date will be in May; there is potential to start earlier part-time if the intern would like. This position will probably be unpaid, but we offer you a lot of flexibility, valuable experience, and job skills development in return. You can work remotely. Someone with an entrepreneurial drive could certainly turn this into a full time job for 3 months, and if this is what you want, we can assign you other responsibilities as well. Or this could be part-time with only the mapping project. We are happy to work with the school to give you class or thesis credit as well; this will definitely be an educational experience! There is also a good chance that, with your help, this will turn into a paid year round position with the potential for full-time employment upon graduation.

Submit your resume (or questions about the job) to Elizabeth Darden at edarden@cherokeen.com. We will take applicants until April 13th, but we encourage you to apply early.

Moderate hourly stipend may be available.  Internships are to be completed between May 1 and August 31, 2012.

The Margaret Sanger Papers Project at New York University has offered summer internships since 1995. Graduate and undergraduate students from universities in the U.S. and Europe have worked with the editorial staff on our microfilm, book and digital publications and received broad experience in historical research and editing. The Project is located in the heart of New York City's Greenwich Village, in the History Department of New York University.

For 2012, we will be offering internships related to our book, digital, and web outreach projects. While most of our internships are arranged during the summer months, we can arranged internship during the academic year as well.

We ask that interns be familiar with IBM-based computers, using Windows, have good research skills and the ability to do careful and detailed work. A background in history, women's history, the history of medicine, and XML encoding are desirable. This is a popular program and we often receive far more applications than we can fill.

Candidates for these positions are ranked based on the Project's specific needs.

Book Edition Internship

The Project is finishing up its research on Volume IV of the Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger, covering the years 1920-1966 and focusing on Sanger's efforts to create a global birth control movement. Interns will work under the supervision of editors, conducting research on specific topics, tracing people, places, events and issues covered in the documents. The research will be used to produce annotation and introductory material for the volume. Research will be conducted in the Project's offices, using the comprehensive microfilm edition and other primary sources, as well as at local libraries and with resources available on the Internet.  Because we are almost finished with the volume research, we anticipate only one or two openings here this summer.

Digital Internships

We continue work on our digital edition of Sanger's speeches and articles, focusing on texts written by Margaret Sanger from the 1940s through the 1960s. Interns will be taught to encode transcriptions using XML/TEI encoding, draft subject index entries for the documents, and conduct research to verify dates, titles, and publication information, or to identify the names of people, organizations and books mentioned in the documents. Digital interns will also work with the Project editors on copyright clearance for the texts, and will continue to search for additional Sanger texts. We anticipate having multiple internships here this summer.

We are also looking for a digital humanities programmer looking to gain experience working with TEI texts. The existing interface for the Speeches and Articles needs revisions in its display properties and we need to add additional search criteria that have been encoded to the search screen. The existing site was written using XSLT and PHP. For more information about the existing software see Matt Zimmerman's 2003 Connect article.

Web Outreach Internship

We are also looking for interns to help with our web presence for the Project, utilizing digital tools such as our Facebook site and research blog, and website analysis to draw attention to the project's work and connect with our audiences. For this internship, familiarity with history, HTML and the web is required.

For more information about the Project and for information on how to apply, please consult the Sanger website or e-mail Cathy Moran Hajo at cathy.hajo@nyu.edu. The deadline for summer internship applications is March 1.

Northwestern University Library has an archival collection that requires the generation and/or clean-up of metadata for an EAD finding aid.

Background information:
Item level cataloging for 1044 photographs held in the Vernon McKay papers in the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies. The photographs visually document about 25 African countries in the immediate pre- or post-independence eras.  The vast majority of the photographs were issued by either outgoing colonial information departments or the newly independent government ministries of information.  Many of the photographs have detailed contemporary labels.  The photographs are an extraordinary resource that document political, social, educational, economic, industrial and public health development.

An EAD finding aid describing the 121 boxes of documents and other materials in the McKay collection was completed several years ago. This finding aids notes four boxes of photographs, but does not describe the photographs individually.  The job will involve transcribing information accompanying the photographs or, in some cases, providing titles and other descriptive information where none currently exists. The intern will enter this and other descriptive metadata into the Library's archival management system, Archon (http://www.archon.org/), which will export a properly formatted finding aid in EAD XML that will be accessible through the Library's web site.

The applicant must have an interest in cataloging/metadata. This is a 20-hour per week, paid internship. Relocation reimbursement and on campus housing is not available. The internship will begin June 2012, last fourteen weeks, and be located in Northwestern University Library in Evanston, IL.

Please send cover letter and resume to n-finzer@northwestern.edu,

Nicole Finzer, Visual Resources Librarian Digital Collections, Library Technology Division, Northwestern University Library

Any of you looking for a summer job should take a look at the internships OCLC is offering on their careers page. There are positions for LS- and IS-minded people alike; even some for anyone with an interest/degree in business. Most are at OCLC headquarters in Dublin, OH, a Columbus suburb. I had a fantastic experience as last summer's Dewey intern, working at the Library of Congress, so I can particularly recommend that position. If it's anything like mine, you'll find OCLC quite generous; I was flown out to Dublin a few times for social events and professional development, and the pay is very competitive. Oh, and I'm pretty sure it got me this tenure-track academic librarian position, so there's that.

I probably don't have any pull with OCLC, but I'd be more than happy to talk about the program if you're interested in applying. Good luck!

The intern will research what is the current trend of track and trace, who is leading the market, and where is the market going.
- They have concluded that (x) technology will be the trend in the very near future and that Logitech should be begin transitioning current processes to incorporate the new and longer term trend.
- This technology will address the 2-Level (PCBA) and smaller products (UE), and obsolete any waiver request, as we now have a solution that fits "All" size and market sensitive types.
- The cost is not prohibitive, given the size of the market and use will only grow, thus bringing down the eventual costs.
- The common consumer will have access to the unique serial number we've developed for warranty, repair and replace, at a decent cost.
* You can apply if you have a student visa that allows you to work in between your school semesters.
* You can apply if you are a strong undergraduate student candidate, but keep in mind these internship are designed to challenge a graduate student.
