ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

The School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites nominations and applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank.

The School offers the Bachelor of Science in Information Science, Master of Science in Information Science, Master of Science in Library Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The School also offers an undergraduate minor in information science, a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Information and Library Science and a variety of graduate certificates and dual degrees (see http://sils.unc.edu/programs for details).

The faculty seeks an outstanding colleague with significant research and teaching strengths and potential appropriate to the broad field of information and library science.

Candidates with a primary interest in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Public libraries and cultural institutions, including topics such as museum informatics, user services, and collaborations and consortia

  • Management, such as financial, project, and team management, policy and community organizing, and leadership

  • Information Organization, such as document engineering, metadata creation and management, semantic structures and information architecture.

Candidates with additional interest in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply: Social networks and social networking, such as community informatics, collaboration and identity-sharing behavior, or Open culture, such as open access publishing, open science and open source communities.

Faculty are expected to engage in research, teach, advise students, participate in School, University and professional activities, and otherwise share their expertise at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

An earned doctorate is required. Candidates should provide evidence of research and teaching excellence, or potential for excellence, in their area of expertise. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

CLINICAL ASSISTANT OR CLINICAL ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

The School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites nominations and applications for two fixed-term faculty Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor positions. The School offers the Bachelor of Science in Information Science, Master of Science in Information Science, Master of Science in Library Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The School also offers an undergraduate minor in information science, a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Information and Library Science, and a variety of graduate certificates and dual degrees (see http://sils.unc.edu for details).

The successful candidate will be expected to teach 3-4 courses per semester (spring 2010 and fall 2010) from the following list of possibilities: Information Tools, Systems Analysis and Design, Programming, Information Security, Local Area Networks, Network Management, Database (beginning through Advanced), Web Databases, Web Development (beginning and advanced), User Interface Design, and the other like courses. The individual in this position will also be asked to advise, serve on committees and participate in faculty activities.

Education Requirements

Candidates are required to have earned a PhD in library/information science plus professional master's degree in same or equivalent field.

Qualifications and Experience

A minimum of five years teaching experience in some combination of the courses listed above is also required for this position, along with experience in academic advising and faculty life.

DEAN - SCHOOL OF INFORMATION AND LIBRARY SCIENCE

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites nominations and applications for the Dean of the School of Information and Library Science. The Dean, a senior level administrator, reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor/Provost. The position is a tenured academic appointment.

The Dean is expected to:

• Provide dynamic leadership for the School’s academic programs, research, funding, faculty and staff development, and service to state and national constituents,
• Demonstrate an awareness of the dynamic and complex nature of the field and assist in maintaining the School’s leadership role,
• Possess successful management experience,
• Demonstrate a commitment to a consultative, decisive, and responsive deanship,
• Articulate the vision of the School for the University, state, and national and international communities of information professionals,
• Provide personal commitment and leadership in pursuing an effective advancement program for the School,
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to translate the School’s vision into achievements in research, teaching and service.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a Carnegie classification RU/VH university and a member of the Association of American Universities. The School of Information and Library Science, one of UNC’s twelve professional schools, offers an undergraduate major in information science and an undergraduate minor in information systems, masters’ degrees in information science and library science, and the Ph.D. The School currently has 26 faculty members, with approximately 330 graduate students and 58 undergraduate students enrolled in its programs. The School benefits from strong support within the University and collaborative efforts across the campus and with academic, corporate, and government partners in the surrounding Research Triangle community.
