Frequently Asked Questions
This list of Frequently Asked Questions will hopefully help you find the answer to your question! If not, check out the more detailed menu items under "Current Students" or feel free to email a member of the Student Services staff or stop by the office and we'll be glad to help you.
Which classes are considered graduate level courses?
Any class numbered 01-399 are considered strictly undergraduate classes and should only be taken by undergraduate students; however, classes numbered 400-699 are considered graduate and undergraduate level classes, meaning these courses can be taken by either group of students. Courses that are numbered 700-999 are strictly graduate level classes. If you are a graduate student, you will only receive academic credit for courses numbered 400 and above.
How can I waive out of INLS 261/461 or other required courses?
To waive out of a required course, students must submit a petition. These forms are available on our Forms page.
How do I add or drop a class?
Students may add or drop courses using the Student Center in Connect Carolina until the University Census Date (typically after the first two weeks of classes). The SILS Student Services staff may also add or drop courses for students during this time. Once the Census Date has passed, students must complete a Drop/Add form, which is available in the SILS main office. The form requires the student's signature and the advisor's signature (the dean's signature is necessary for adding after the Census Date), and should be delivered to the Registrar's Office in SASB.
Can I receive credit for courses at other universities?
UNC Chapel Hill students may take courses at several local universities through interinstitutional registration. Please refer to the Registrar's policies on interinstitutional registration for more details.
May I transfer courses from other colleges and universities?
Yes. Undergraduate students may transfer credits from other institutions through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
Graduate students may transfer up to 9.0 credit hours of graduate course credit. Please refer to the Graduate School's policies on Course Credit.
How much time do I have to complete the work for my incomplete?
Undergraduates typically have eight weeks to complete their incompletes from the prior semester. For incompletes received in the Spring semester, undergraduates usually get until mid October to complete the work. For exact dates, please check the Registrar's Office calendar.
Graduate students have one year to complete the work. Once the one-year deadline has passed, all grades of IN will become F*.
If I was not enrolled during one semester and would like to re-enroll in classes for an upcoming semester, what do I do?
Undergraduate students must apply for readmission through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Please view the SILS Undergraduate Handbook regarding readmission for more details.
Graduate students must submit a Readmission Application to the SILS office for approval. Forms are available on the Graduate School's Form Finder page.
I am a graduate student and didn't receive any funding from SILS. What other financial aid options are there?
There are several options available for funding:
- Need-based aid (federal student loans): Your first priority should be to complete your FAFSA application, which is available through the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid (919-962-8396). Do get in touch with them as soon as possible if you intend to go this route. They deal with a high volume of students, and submitting your application earlier is always better.
- Grant Source Library: This is an excellent resource for finding funding (research funding, fellowships, etc.) while you’re a student here at UNC. Visit the Grant Source Library website or contact them at 919-962-3463. Be sure to check out their Information and Library Science Funding Guide.
- Jobs on campus: There are many departments across campus that request the services of SILS students, so check departmental websites for available positions. The Academic Affairs Library (main library system at UNC) hires many of our students in libraries across campus. Their hiring tends to increase over the Summer months as the upcoming fiscal year’s budget is finalized. ITS also uses our students for various projects and help desks across campus.
- Jobs off campus: We often receive notification about job opportunities from companies and organizations outside of UNC. These notices will be forwarded on to student listservs as we receive them. For other classified pages from the area, check out our local area information sheet.
I have a job on campus. How do I get a tuition award?
SILS receives only a small amount of out-of-state tuition remissions per year, and these awards are reserved for students working within SILS. In-state tuition awards through campus jobs are available, but students must meet certain requirements to be eligible. To view those requirements, please refer to the Graduate School's rules on tuition support.
Note: Students should not seek out campus employment merely for tuition assistance. The most important aspects of a campus job is the work experience. Stipends, health insurance, and tuition assistance are all added bonuses, so think carefully when choosing your job!
How do I receive funding for my research?
SILS students may apply for Carnegie grants to assist with research costs. Instructions on how to apply are located here.
How do I apply for the Academic Common Market (ACM)?
Graduate students from certain states are eligible for the Academic Common Market (ACM), which allows students to pay only the in-state tuition rate for the Library Science program. Please refer to the Graduate School's Academic Common Market site for more details.
