Graduation

Congratulations! You have reached an important milestone...Graduation! Now what happens? We know those last few semesters leading up to graduating can be stressful. We hope that the below checklist of important things you should be doing in order to guarantee a successful graduation process will help ease some of that confusion. As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact the SILS main office at 962-8366 and we will be glad to help you out. 

 

Graduation Checklist 

Undergraduate Seniors:

  1. Register for INLS 697: Emerging Topics in Information Science. If you are planning on graduating in August or December you must take this class in the spring semester. This is the only semester the course is offered.
  2. Apply to graduate in Connect Carolina. Also fill out the SILS Graduation Application and return your completed form to the Undergraduate Student Services Manager.
  3. Complete a graduation check. Make sure you have fulfilled all of your requirements and have enough hours to graduate. If you have any questions about requirements or hours please contact the student services staff.

Second Year Masters Students: 

  1. Register for INLS 992: Masters Paper using the Permission Required form. Return your completed form to the SILS office and the studet services staff will register you. Visit our Master's Paper page for tips on choosing an advisor, finding a topic, and how to format your paper correctly.
  2. Apply to graduate in ConnectCarolina. Also make sure you complete the Graduate School's appplication for graduation using the Graduate School's E-Graduation System.
  3. Sign up for the Masters Comprehensive Exam. The comprehensive exam is held both in the fall and spring semesters. Review sessions are held each semester and copies of prior year's questions are available in the SLS Library. The exam is administered over email and is held from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Fall: Friday before Fall Break Spring: Friday before Spring Break
  4. Turn in your masters paper by the posted deadline.

Doctoral Students:

  1. Register for INLS 994: Doctoral Dissertation using the Permisson Required form. Return your completed form to the SILs office and the student services staff will register you.
  2. Apply to graduate in Connect Carolina. Also make sure you complete the Graduate School's application for graduation using the Graduate School's E-Graduation System.
  3. Schedule your dissertation defense. Make sure you defend your dissertation with enough time to complete any edits before the graduate school's due date. Consult the registrar's calendar for exact due dates.
  4. Visit the Graduate School's Thesis and Dissertation Guide on how to correctly format your dissertation
  5. Submit your dissertation electronically to the Graduate school by the posted deadline.

Spring 2012

February 10- Last day for Graduate and Undergraduate students to file a degree application with their Dean's office 

March 2- Comprehensive Exam for  Masters students graduating in May and August 

April 2- Masters Papers due to SILS Office 

April 9- Final approved copies of Dissertations due to the Graduate School by 4:00 pm

TBA - Last day to register undergraduate Honors Thesis with Honors Office 

May 12- Doctoral Hooding Ceremony

May 13- Commencement and Degree award date for May graduates

Summer 2012

July 10- Last day for Graduate and Undergraduate Students to file a degree application with their Dean's Office to graduate in August for degree to be awarded in August

July 9- Final copies of Master's Papers for August graduation due to SILS office by 5pm

July 16- Final copies of dissertations for August graduation due to Graduate School by 4pm

August 13- Degree Award date for August graduates

Fall 2012

October 12- Last day for Graduate and Undergraduate students to file a degree application with their Dean's Office to graduate in December for degree to be awarded in December

October 12- Master's Comprehensive Exam for graduate students who are graduating in December

November 12- Final copies of Master's Papers for December graduation due to SILS office by 5pm

November 19- Final copies of dissertations for December graduation due to Graduate School by 4pm

December 16- December Commencement and Degree Award Date
