Follow these three important steps to keeping your computer in good working order:

1.  Always use antivirus software.  UNC provides the Symantec Antivirus client for free to students on its http://shareware.unc.edu/software.html page.   It's recommended that you only run a single antivirus client on your computer.  After it is installed, be sure it is automatically updating its virus definitions.  Scan you entire hard drive at regular intervals.

2.  Have a data backup plan and stick to it.  Hard drives and other computer components can fail when you least expect it.  See the SILS backup page for more information on established backups and personal backup options.

3.  Run Updates.  Keep your operating system (OS) and applications up-to-date.  Make sure to install the regular OS updates from Microsoft, Apple, or Linux on a regular basis.
