Duck

Duck is a storage device from Network Appliance. It holds personal folders ("home directories") where students, staff and faculty can store documents. Duck is accessed with the login name "ad\[your onyen]" and your onyen password. Your home directory on Duck is named after your Onyen. You are the only one with permission to access that folder. (Permissions can, however, be [ http://sils.unc.edu/itrc/its/faq.php?id=4614 ] changed in order to share files with others.) Please keep the total space you use on Duck within 200MB.

When you sign onto a computer in the SILS lab using your onyen login, you are attaching to Duck. By default, your home directory will be mapped to the H:\ drive. All of the individual folders live in a folder called home ; you can map to this drive from a lab machine by right-clicking on My Computer, choosing Map Network Drive and browsing to Duck's home folder from there. You can also [ http://sils.unc.edu/itrc/its/faq.php?id=4701 ] map to these drives on your laptop and use them on campus or connect to them via [ http://sils.unc.edu/itrc/its/faq.php?id=4627 ] FTP or VPN.

Ruby

Ruby is a Linux server that provides services used by many SILS classes, especially those involving Web development and databases. It runs [ http://www.apache.org/ ] Apache and [ http://www.php.net ] PHP.

Pearl

Pearl is a Unix server that runs MySQL and Oracle. These services can be accessed via Ruby.

If you need to use one of these servers or its services, see someone at the Help Desk to learn how to get access to what you need.
