You can share files with others at SILS by putting them in a shared folder in your directory on Duck (usually the H: drive). You can choose a user or group of users with whom to share your files, and choose different permissions (just reading, or reading and writing) for those users. There are two sets of instructions below, a quick summary list and a more detailed set of instructions with illustrations.
If you're fairly familiar with Windows file sharing, you can use these summary instructions:
-
Open My Computer and open your H: drive from within it.
-
Right-click on the folder or file you want to share, and choose Properties.
-
Click the Security tab, then click Edit to change Permissions. Select Add.
-
From within the Select Users or Groups dialog, click Advanced, then Find Now to see a list of users. Or type in the person's onyen and Check Names.
-
Click OK, then choose the permissions for the new user.
-
Click OK.
Detailed instructions:
-
From the Start menu, open Computer to access the available drives on the computer, and double-click on your username directory (this should be your H: drive, lstacey in the example) to open up to your files.
-
Right-click on the folder you want to share (the folder "share" in the example below). Scroll down to the "Properties" item in the dialog box.
-
The Properties box opens. Click the "Security" tab to see the current list of groups and users who have access to this folder or file. To add another group or user, click the Edit button.
-
The Permissions for Share dialog box opens. Click on the Add button.
-
The Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog opens. Type in the onyens of people you want to add, and the select Check Names. Or, select the Advanced button to select from a list of users or Groups. Select OK when done adding users or groups.
-
In the Properties box, choose the permissions you wish to add for the users or groups with whom you've shared the files. If you wish to just allow someone to see the files, do not change anything; the default values of Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, and Read will let them see what's in your folder, but not change it. If you wish to give them write access as well, click the Modify check box. The Write box will automatically get checked as well. Leave both boxes checked. Click OK.
