The SILS lab has two digital voice recorders that can be checked out from the SILS Help Desk. In order to download the voice files that you record, you will need to use the multimedia computer in the SILS lab (PC41). This computer has a USB drive that can read Smart Media cards.
How to Record Your Audio File

Be sure the SmartMedia card is inserted all the way into the top of the recorder. You can eject this card by pushing up the gray button on the back of the recorder (Power/Lock switch on back must be set to OFF position.)

On the back of the recorder, set the Power/Lock switch to the ON position, "Please wait" flashes on the display.

To start a new recording, press the FOLDER button to choose a folder (A, B, or C.)

Press the REC button to start recording. Aim the microphone at the sound source.

Press the REC button again to pause recording. Press REC again to resume recording.

Press the STOP button to stop recording.

Press the REW button to rewind your recording.
To overwrite your recording:

Simply select the FOLDER button to locate your file.

Press the FF or REW button several times to choose the file that you want to overwrite.

Press the REC button to start overwriting.

Press the STOP button once you're finished recording.
To insert a recording into a previously recorded file:

Simply select the FOLDER button to locate your file.

Press the FF or REW button several times to choose the file that you want to insert.

Press the PLAY button at the point where you want to insert a recording.

Press the REC button to start inserting the additional recording.

Press the STOP button once you're finished with your insert.
To select a recording mode

Press the MENU button.

Then press the PLAY button.

Press the FF or REW button to choose between SP (Standard Playback) and LP (Long Playback) mode.

Press the PLAY button to complete the setup screen.

Press STOP to close the menu.
Note:
Chose SP (Standard Playback) mode for recording meetings or lectures for crisp clarity. The SmartMedia card can store up to 16 MB of data. This is equivalent to 2hr 35 min. for SP Mode and 5 hr 30 min for LP Mode.
To record telephone conversations (landlines only)

Plug the wall jack into the Telephone Recording Controller.

Plug the cable from the controller into the telephone jack socket.

Plug the 3.5 mm jack from the controller into the DVR mic socket.

Initiate your phone call. Press REC to begin recording. Press STOP when you are done recording.
Transferring Data to the Multimedia Computers (PC41)

Connect the recorder directly to the computer using the included USB cable. Then set the rear-panel POWER/LOCK switch to ON

The Olympus DSS Player should then be launched automatically.

The Device Manager located on the bottom left corner, contains all the files from the recorder.

To download the files to a PC, simply select Download and choose which folders you want transferred. You can also select Download all and that will transfer all the folder files from Device Manager to the corresponding folders in Dictation Folders.
To convert to a WAV file

Select the DSS file that you want to convert.

From the menu bar, select File > Convert to WAV file .

Then, select where you want to save the WAV file.
