How to Acquire software through MSDN's ELMS service

The ELMS site uses a simple shopping-cart checkout system, and you need a valid UNC email address to access the site. Below are some instructions on how to access, download, and install your software through ELMS.

  1. Visit [ http://msdn04.e-academy.com/unc_lis ] SILS' ELMS Site.

  2. Retrieve your password.

    1. Click on the login link on the left side of the page, and click the link under the "I've forgotten my password" section to the right of the login boxes.

    2. Enter your UNC e-mail address in the form of onyen@email.unc.edu (aliases will not work). The system will email you your password.

    3. Retrieve your password from your email, return to the ELMS site, and login.

  3. Find your software. Once you are logged into the system, you can select the software packages you need and add them to your cart.

  4. Choose your format. You will have the option to either download the CD image (in the form of a .iso file that can then be burned to a CD) or to check out the software CD from the SILS lab. We recommend that you choose the download option, as it will be easier for you to install and make copies for yourself.

  5. Check out. Once you have checked out, the system will provide you with the product keys/serial numbers you need to install the software. These will NOT be e-mailed to you ? you must view them on the ELMS website.

  6. Get your software.

    1. If you chose to download your software, you may do so after you checkout. The ELMS site provides downloads in the form of .ISO files, which are [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_image/ ] disk image files. In order to "open" these files, you must [ http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm ] download software that either burns the file to a CD or creates a "virtual" CD of the file.

    2. If you opted to check out the CD from the helpdesk, swing by and borrow it from us (and please note that software CDs from the SILS lab must remain in the lab at all times).

  7. Install your software.

  8. Enter your product key. The first time you launch your software, you will be asked to provide a product key. You can find this product key on the MSDN site. Click the "My Software" tab on the left-hand side of the page to find a list of the software you have ordered. From there, you can click the link for "CD Checkout" or "Download" (whichever is applicable for the software you ordered). On the next page, the product key is displayed.

  9. If you have any questions about the ELMS website or the software installation, please stop by the SILS Help Desk, email , or call us: (919)962-8188.

Usage Guidelines

You may use the software for non-commercial purposes including instructional use, research and/or design, development and testing of projects for class assignment and tests or personal projects. You may not use the Program software for any for-profit software development.

When you are no longer a registered student in a department that is a member of the MSDN Academic Alliance, you may no longer receive updates for your personal use computer. However, you may continue to use previously installed software on your computer, provided you continue to follow program guidelines.

You may not give copies of loaned software to anyone else for their use. Other qualifying students must obtain software via the method(s)set up by the MSDNAA Site Administrator.

If you violate the terms of the License Agreement and EULA, the MSDNAA Program Administrator will demand confirmation of removal of the program software on your personal use computer.
