All SILS students are given UNC e-mail addresses. This account uses the Onyen login. By visiting this link, you can manage your account via a Web interface. You can change your password, register your network card with DHCP, manage your mail account etc.
There are a number of email clients that you can use with your UNC email account. Within the lab, Outlook Express, Mulberry, and Pine have been installed on the lab machines. If you prefer you may also SSH or telnet directly to isis.unc.edu and use UNIX pine to look at your mail. UNC also has webmail, but it is recommended that you not use this as your primary email client because of reduced functionality. To learn how to set up your a particular mail client with UNC email please visit Email Documentation. To learn how to setup your mail from home please visit the ATN help page for e-mail.
SILS Windows Login
As a SILS student you have been given a Windows account so that you may use the services we provide. Your Windows network login allows you to access a shared directory space referred to as the L:\ drive. When you log on to the computers in the lab, you will also have an H:\ drive which is your personal folder while you are here at SILS. The L:\ drive is a collection of everyone's H:\ drive. By default no one can browse your folder. You will have to change permissions on your folder in order to share files with your classmates.
Laptop
Beginning with the Summer 2001 class, the SILS faculty require that you purchase a Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI) equivalent laptop . Here is the requirements page . With your Windows logon from SILS and some adjustments to your laptop, you can can access the SILS network. Following the directions should allow you to log on whether you are using a wired or wireless network card. The library and lab are places you can log on to gain access to the wired network. If you own a wireless card you can access the wireless network from all public places within Manning.
Equipment Checkout
SILS students may borrow from the lab and library multimedia equipment. The equipment includes two Sony Mavica digital cameras, a Sony DSC-F717 digital camera, a Canon GL2 digital video camera, and two video cameras (Sony TRV27 DV format video camera, and a Sony Hi-8 camcorder). The computer lab also has six laptop computers and a cassette transcribing machine available for checkout.

All classrooms and public areas in and around Manning Hall are wireless ready with the 802.11b standard. Areas included are: Library and main computing labs, rooms 208, 209, 214, 215, 216, 303, 304, and 307. In addition the public areas of the building such as the foyer, front steps of Manning, the Lenoir side of Manning are also covered with wireless connectivity. The school has 55 wireless cards for student access. They may be checked out for eight hours or the end of day only.
Help Desk
IT Services' help desk is staffed with lab assistants and managers trained in using the lab's equipment and software. Answers to frequently asked questions are maintained on this site; please see the navigation bar on the right.
Listservs
SILS maintains a number of email lists. As a member of the SILS community you should have been automatically added to the sils-announce@listserv.unc.edu list. If you are a masters student you have been added to the sils-masters@listserv.unc.edu, PhD students are on sils-phds, and IS minor students are on sils-minors.. These lists are moderated lists which serve as official communication to you.
SILS also maintains other lists such as sils-jobs@listserv.unc.edu, and sils-students@listserv.unc.edu. Sils-students, in particular, is a vital link for students who wish to ask their classmates questions. Sils-jobs is useful for job hunting as both full-time and part-time positions are posted. More information can be found on the listserv FAQ.
