Computers

Classrooms

The computer classroom (Room 117) at SILS offers 32 Dell Optiplex GX270 series computers, each with a 3.0GHz Pentium(R) 4 processor running Windows Vista. Each computer has 3 GB RAM, a 80 Gig NTFS hard drive, a DVD/CD-ROM drive, a DVD Burner, and a 17" flat Dell panel Ultrasharp 1703 FPt LCD monitor with maximum resolution of 1280 X 1024 pixels. There are six HP ScanJet 8200 USB Scanners, six HP 5470 CSE Scanners and one HP ScanJet 8250 for larger scan needs. Computer projection is provided by a ceiling mounted EIKI LC-XG300 projector. Other features of the classroom include an indirect lighting system, a sound system, and a supplemental air conditioning system.

Other classrooms at SILS are each equipped with a Dell Dimension 8200 computer and a VCR. Both devices are attached to a Proxima 9260+ multimedia projector. The classroom computers contain the same software packages that the computing labs contain. Laptop computers can also be projected through the multimedia projectors.

Lab

The general use area of the outer lab primarily has two models of computer. PC 42,43,44,45 are of the same specifications as the computer classroom (Dell Optiplex GX270), the other five, PC 41,46,47,48,49 are Dell Optiplex 745, with PC41 as the multimedia PC.

The multimedia PC is running Windows XP, while the other 8 PCs run Windows Vista. All of them have 3Gb of RAM.

The lab now has 4 new 20-inch iMacs, each with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM, and 320GB hard drive.

A networked HP 4200 LaserJet printer is available in the general use area as well as a networked Lexmark C750 color ink-jet printer.

File Servers

Windows Platforms

SILS Microsoft Windows services and Active Directory infrastructure are hosted on several Windows 2003 servers. Rack-mounted Dell 2650's and 2850's servers provide services for authentication, storage, file sharing, ftp, software deployment, desktop management and printing.

Linux Platforms

SILS IT Services also maintains numerous Linux hosts that support the computing needs of students, faculty and staff. The primary Linux machine at the school is named "Ruby". Ruby provides web and development space and hosts a variety of applications. Another server named "Pearl" serves as the School's main database server, running MySQL and Oracle 10g. Both systems run on Dell PowerEdge 1950 rack-mounted servers with fiber-attached EMC2 storage arrays.

In addition to Ruby and Pearl, the school maintains several other Linux hosts. A Sun Enterprise 250 Server acts as a network backup server attached to two Spectra Logic backup units. Two Dell PowerEdge servers support faculty and student research, and are each equipped with dual processors and 4GB of memory.

Network

All desktop computers in the lab and the school itself are connected to a departmental switched ethernet network. Every machine on the network minimally has its own dedicated full-duplex 1Gb port, while all file servers in the school have dedicated 1Gb ethernet connections. All classrooms and public areas in and around Manning Hall are wireless ready with the 802.11b standard. Areas included are: Library and main computing labs, rooms 208, 209, 216, 303, 304, and 307. In addition the public areas of the building such as the foyer, front steps of Manning, the Lenoir side of Manning are also covered with wireless connectivity. The school's network is connected to the UNC campus network over an associated Tier 1 hub switch by single and multimode fiber via either 1000Mb/sec or 100 Mb/sec Ethernet.  The primary connection to the commodity Internet is presently served by two separate diverse routed gigabit links to MCNC. These links also provide our connectivity to Internet2 and NLR research and education networks.
