How do I Use My Campus Computer Accounts?

All SILS students have two separate computer accounts on the UNC network, a UNC Onyen account and a SILS account. While the username portion of these accounts will match, the passwords are not automatically synchronized.

Onyen Account

Onyen accounts, also called UNC accounts, are maintained by UNC's Information Technology Services (ITS). Onyen is an acronymn for "The Only Name You'll Ever Need." Your Onyen is your login name for almost all computerized University services and gives you access to a campus email address and server space to store files and post web pages.

Your campus email address is onyen@email.unc.edu, where "onyen" is your Onyen.

The URL for any web pages your put in your Onyen space will be:
http://www.unc.edu/~onyen/pagename, where "onyen" is your Onyen and "pagename" is the name of your web page file.

You will also use your Onyen login name and password to log on to computers in any of the ITS computer labs. Once you have logged on to one of these machines your Onyen server space will appear as drive H.

SILS Account

SILS students have a second computer account to gain access to SILS servers and resources. Your SILS account will have the same username as your Onyen account. The started passwords will be given at orientation or you may see one of the Lab Assistants at the SILS Help Desk for password resets. Passwords for the SILS and Onyen accounts do not automatically synchronize.

Your SILS account will allow you to login to all of the computers in the SILS Computer Lab. When you login to these machines, your SILS server space will appear as drive H.
