How do I Store Data?
SILS and the University both make storage space available to students. Both systems are backed up nightly. Students must take extra steps to backup important data on personal computers and laptops in case of hard drive failure. Personal backup solutions include saving backup copies of files to external hard drives, USB drives, CDs, DVDs, or remote servers. Alternatively, students may use a third party backup solution called "Iron Mountain". Iron Mountain is availble through the University for $10.00 per month.
SILS Storage
SILS Students are given home directories on the "duck" server. Students access the duck server and their home directories when logging into the computers in the SILS Computer Lab. Home directories automatically map the H: drive. Alternatively, SILS students may also ftp to duck.ils.unc.edu and access their home directory. When connecting via FTP, users must specify the domain "ils" before their username when connecting via FTP. For example, for user JohnDoe the user ID would be specified as ils\JohnDoe. For more information on using FTP see the SILS document "Use FTP to Transfer Files"
University Storage
UNC Students can use their personal AFS data storage space. The UNC Data Storage Policy states that the entitlement for such space is 100 megabytes for undergraduates and affiliates, and 250 megabytes for faculty, staff, graduate and professional students, and student organizations. Web space is included in this allocation. For additional information on accessing this storage space please the article "How do I access my AFS space (H drive)?" at the University's Help & Support website.
