Don't let money matters keep you from joining the ILSSA Fall Break trip to Washington, D.C. Oct. 14-16. Activities planned include tours of the U.S. Department of State, D.C. Public Library, National Geographic Society, ABC News, Library of Congress (a session on digital libraries and more), National Archives, a panel of Information Scientists, the U.S. Senate Library, NPR, a networking reception with professionals and SILS alumni, and some free time to discover on your own.
Awards of $200 each are available to five students. Longtime SILS supporter Ms. Ruth Gambee of Burlington, N.C., generously initiated this award with a gift of $200. The remaining four awards are supported by Dean José-Marie Griffiths and Dr. Barbara Moran; Dr. Evelyn Daniel and Kristin Chaffin; Dr. Brian Sturm and April Errickson; and the school.
All students are eligible to apply for these awards. Students are asked to submit one paragraph explaining how a $200 travel award can make this otherwise unattainable trip a reality. Applicants are also asked to explain the value of this trip to his or her intended career path. Submissions should be sent to shawn_jackson@unc.edu NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17.
Applications will be reviewed by trip coordinator and Director of Development Shawn Jackson; Student Services Manager Beth Dye; and SILS Librarian Rebecca Vargha.
Recipients will be announced the week of September 20, 2004. For national security purposes in D.C., all students attending the trip should let Maureen Barry mebarry@email.unc.edu know which tours they plan to attend, provide social security numbers and dates of birth BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2004.
