Abe Crystal, doctoral student at the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been awarded the "Doctoral Students to ALISE Award." He is one of only two students selected to receive the competitive award for the international conference which provides $400 for lodging and complimentary registration for the ALISE annual conference.

Crystal was nominated by Dr. Jose-Marie Griffiths, dean of SILS. He submitted a statement on an issue relating to the theme of the 2006 ALISE conference, "From Research to Practice: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in LIS Education." Crystal's comments focused on the balance between coursework and research and the need for students to publish their findings.

The ALISE Conference will be held January 16-19, 2006 in San Antonio, TX.
