David Goble, dean of libraries at Central Piedmont Community College, has accepted the role of vice-chair/chair-elect of the School of Information and Library Sciences' Board of Visitors. He joins Sarah Snow, the current chair, as they work to advance the efforts and activities of the Board.
Goble's role is a four-year commitment with two years as vice-chair followed by two years as chair. He accepted the appointment at the Board's fall meeting on October 17.
"I am thrilled to be appointed to the Board of Visitors and to continue serving SILS," Goble said. "This appointment is particularly pleasing as I was introduced to the Board of Visitors as the president-elect of the Information and Library Science Student Association at the board's inaugural meeting in 1993. Dr. Griffiths has brought a renewed sense of energy and initiative to SILS and I am honored to be a part of those efforts."
Goble is a 1994 graduate of SILS and is currently the dean of libraries at Central Piedmont Community College. He holds a MA in American Literature from the University of South Carolina and a BA in English from The Citadel. Prior to becoming a librarian he spent 18 years in banking. He is a former Marine officer and veteran of the Vietnam conflict.
Goble's commitment to SILS has taken many forms. He served two terms as treasurer of the SILS Alumni Association and one term as president. Prior to accepting the appointment as vice chair-chair elect of the Board of Visitors, Goble served on the SILS Carolina First Campaign Committee.
Goble is also actively professionally. He is co-chair of the NCLA Endowment Committee, and a member of the NCLA Public Affairs Committee. He serves on NCLIVE Resource Advisory Committee and is chair of the NC Council of Community College Administrators. He has just completed a stint as the president of the Metrolina Library Association and chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee of ALA's Community and Junior College Library Section.
"I am excited that David Goble has agreed to serve as the vice-chairperson," said Snow. "Having worked with David in his previous roles as SILS Alumni president and on the Carolina First Campaign Committee, I have seen firsthand his commitment to UNC at Chapel Hill, to SILS, and to the issues in the information and library disciplines. David brings a wealth of varied experiences to this position and together with this Board of Visitors and Dean Griffiths' leadership we see SILS continuing to remain the leader in Information and Library Science colleges."
