Leadership and diversity scholar to join SILS

Photo of Mark Winston Noted leadership and diversity scholar, Mark Winston, will join the faculty of the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) as associate professor on January 1, 2006.

Mark comes to SILS from Rutgers University where, for the last seven years, he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership, management and organizational behavior, knowledge creation and use and reference and information services in the Department of Library and Information Science in the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies.

Mark's research focuses on the application of leadership theory and principles in the study of organizations and the refinement of models of leadership competencies in defining the leadership education needs of those who are likely to contribute to organizational success. His research has also addressed the documented connection between investment in diversity and overall organizational success. He has presented extensively and published two books, numerous chapters and more than twenty-five articles in peer-reviewed journals, on various aspects of leadership, management and diversity. He has received numerous awards including the 2005 American Library Association National Award for Excellence in Diversity Research.

In addition to his more than twelve years experience in higher education, Mark has worked in the private sector with J.P. Morgan and with the United States General Accounting Office (now Government Accountability Office). He has served as a consultant and trainer for college, university, public and state libraries; information technology and publishing companies; and the U.S. Department of Education among other organizations.

Mark earned his Ph.D. in Library and Information Science, and his Masters of Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA. He has a bachelor of science degree in business management from Hampton University in Hampton, VA.
