SILS commencement scheduled for December 18

On Sunday, Dec. 18, the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) will conduct its winter commencement ceremony and celebration for students who have completed their degree requirements.

Ceremony
The SILS ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the Pleasants Family Room of the Louis Round Wilson Library. All members of the SILS community, and especially all graduating students and any friends and family they'd like to have join them, are invited to attend.

Students: Arrive at the second floor of Wilson Library no later than 9:15 a.m.

Faculty: Assemble in the lobby at 9:30 a.m.

Students and Faculty: A group photo will be taken on the steps of the Wilson Library immediately following the ceremony.

Guests: Proceed directly to the Wilson Library and be seated prior to the beginning of the ceremony.

Commencement Speaker
Susan Perry, senior advisor of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and director of Programs for the Council on Library Information Resources, is the guest speaker for commencement.

Reception
A reception sponsored by the SILS Alumni Association will immediately follow the ceremony in the lobby of Wilson Library.

Regalia
The school has a small number of caps, gowns and hoods available from previous commencement ceremonies that may be borrowed. Contact Meg McKee at 919-962-8366 in the SILS Dean's office beginning Dec. 5 if you would like to borrow any of these items.

You may wish to consider donating your regalia to SILS after the reception for future ceremonies.

Parking
Parking is available in the Morehead Planetarium lot on Franklin St. or the Swain lot at the corner of S. Columbia and Cameron (accessible from Cameron).  Rates are $1.00 per hour. See map for details.

University Commencement Activities
SILS students are encouraged to participate in the university ceremony, which will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, in the Dean E. Smith Center. This year's Commencement Speaker will be Etta Pisano, director of UNC's Biomedical Research Imaging Center and Kenan professor of radiology and biomedical engineering.
