Dr. Robert S. Martin, the first librarian selected by President George W. Bush to head the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), was awarded an honorary doctoral degree of humane letters from Dominican University where he also presented the commencement address on May 6, 2006.
Dominican University recognized Martin for his leadership and advocacy in the field of library education, enhancing the reputation of librarians across the globe and his dedication to developing creative strategies for enhancing library education.
Before Martin (Ph.D. '88) left his position of director of IMLS in 2005, he engineered a record level of federal support and overseeing the distribution of more than $899 million in federal grants to America's museums and libraries. He is currently the Lillian Bradshaw Endowed Chair in Library Science at Texas Woman's University and serves as a member of the Louis Round Wilson Academy.
