Award-winning young adult author, Sarah Dessen, to be featured at Steinfirst Lecture
Dec. 15, 2007—Sarah Dessen, author of young adult books, will be the featured presenter at the 2008 Steinfirst Lecture on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hosted by the School of Information and Library Science, the lecture will take place on Saturday, Apr. 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hanes Art Auditorium.
NCLA REMCo Roadbuilders' Award goes to Dr. Irene Owens
Dec. 11, 2008—SILS alumna, Dr. Irene Owens, Ph.D. '95, has received the 2007 North Carolina Library Association's Roundtable for Ethnic Minority Concerns (REMCo) Roadbuilders' Award for Library Education. Owens is the dean of the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, NC.
Joan Petit at home at American University in Cairo
Dec. 11, 2007—When Joan Petit (MSLS '06) was a little girl, she knew she would probably live overseas someday. After all, her parents were global travelers and her father ran a hospital ship called Project Hope in the 70s that sailed from San Francisco to Tunisia and other parts of Indonesia. But it wasn't until she adopted her two sons, Solomon and Fiseha from Ethiopia that Joan became increasingly interested in northeastern Africa—especially the areas around the Nile River.

"If Only in My Dreams"—a side dish of readings to benefit food bank
Nov. 28, 2007—The Deep Dish Theatre Company will present another of its Side Dish events, "If Only in My Dreams," on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Admission for the evening of readings is a suggested donation of $5 or a non-perishable food item, with proceeds to benefit the Inter-faith Council’s Food Bank.

Nov. 20, 2007—Thanksgiving recess begins tomorrow, Wednesday, November 21, 2007, with no classes held. The University will be closed Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 22 and Friday, November 23.

Drs. Jane Greenberg and Eva Méndez edit Semantic Web book
Nov. 9, 2007—Jane Greenberg, a Francis Carroll McColl Term Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS), and Eva Méndez, a professor of librarianship and information science at Spain’s Universidad Carlos III of Madrid and former visiting scholar at the SILS Metadata Research Center, have coedited the recently released book Knitting the Semantic Web, published by Haworth Press, Inc.

Holiday Spirits—Storytelling and Musical Entertainment
Nov. 8, 2007—Get ready for great storytelling and musical entertainment for children and adults alike. Dr. Laura Gasaway to speak at SILS winter commencement ceremony

Nov. 8, 2007—The ROTC of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will honor veterans during a special tribute on November 9 at the Newman Catholic Student Center Parish at 218 Pittsboro St. Officially, November 11, 2007 has been proclaimed Veteran's Day, and the week of November 11 through November 17, 2007, has been set aside as “National Veterans Awareness Week."

Nov. 2, 2007—Dr. Barbara Wildemuth, professor at the School of Information and Library Science, has been elected to a three-year term as Director-at-Large for the American Society of Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T).
SILS coordinates campus-wide SECC effort
Oct. 31, 2007—The kick-off of UNC at Chapel Hill's campus-wide State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC) was held on October 1st in the Great Hall of the Student Union. The event featured exhibits of North Carolina charities; remarks by Chancellor James Moeser and this year's chair, Dean José-Marie Griffiths; food; prizes and the National Anthem sung by SILS student coordinator, Devan Donaldson.

Workforce study receives second IMLS grant
August 8, 2007—The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has awarded researchers at the University of North Carolina's School of Information and Library Science (SILS) and Institute on Aging (IOA) a $566,385 federal grant to continue studying career patterns of library and information science graduates.
Jeffrey Tibbs named SILS associate dean for administration

Patricia Harris named Distinguished Alumna
May 17, 2007—Patricia R. Harris (’70 MSLS) has been named the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) 2007 Distinguished Alumna. The award recognizes those who exhibit a strong commitment to librarianship or information science and demonstrate outstanding professional achievements at the international, national, state or local level. She received the award during the school’s spring commencement ceremony on May 13.

Interview with the CIA Library

David Goble named State Librarian of South Carolina

Jan. 4, 2007—A free, open conference for those interested in science communication, education and literacy on the Web will be held Saturday, January 20 on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
