Happy Holidays!

Dec. 19, 2008 - The School of Information and Library Science will be closed for the winter holidays Monday, December 22 through Monday, January 5. The Dean's Office will close Monday, December 22 and will reopen December 29 at 8:00 a.m. The office will be closed January 1 and 2, 2009 and reopen January 5 at 8:00 a.m.

Spring semester opens Friday, January 9 with classes beginning Monday, January 12, 2009.

Rebecca Vargha receives Distinguished Alumna Award from SLIS at NCCU

Dec. 2, 2008 - Rebecca Vargha, head librarian at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has received the Distinguished Alumna Award from her alma mater, the School of Library and Information Sciences at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). The award was presented during a special ceremony at NCCU this fall. It is the second Distinguished Alumna Award given by the school.

Nov. 6, 2008 - Doctoral Fellowships in Archival Studies are currently available through a new eight-campus initiative for individuals who are interested in pursuing careers as educators and scholars and who would be entering doctoral programs in Fall 2009.

Dr. David Carr to speak on "An American Library in an American community"

Nov. 5, 2008 —Dr. David Carr, associate professor, will speak on "An American Library in an American Community" at the Friends of New Hanover County Public Library Annual Meeting, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13. The free program will be in the New Hanover Room on the third floor of the Main Library in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Mark Allen Greene to speak at SILS winter commencement ceremony

Oct. 31, 2008 —Mark Greene, director of the American Heritage Center, University of Wyoming, will provide the keynote address at the School's winter commencement ceremony.

Oct. 29, 2008 —On Sunday, Dec. 14, the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) will conduct its winter commencement ceremony and celebration for students who have completed their degree requirements.

Oct. 28, 2008 - Dr. Gary Marchinonini, Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor at the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been elected president for a three-year term by the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T).

Oct. 28, 2008 - Doctoral student Cassidy Sugimoto has been elected to serve a two-year term as deputy director on the ASIS&T Chapter Assembly.

K.T. Vaughan admitted as senior member of AHIP

Oct. 28, 2008 - K.T. Vaughan (MSLS 2001) has been admitted as a Senior Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP), the credentialing body for medical and health sciences librarians and information specialists.

DICE group wins SAA award

Oct. 28, 2008 - During the 72nd annual meeting of the Society of American Archivists, the Data Intensive Cyber Environments (DICE) group received the 2008 J. Franklin Jameson Archival Advocacy Award.

Phillip Edwards receives Crestos Award

Oct. 28, 2008 - New SILS faculty member, Phillip Edwards, was awarded the American Society of Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) James M. Cretsos Leadership Award for his contributions to the organization.

2008-2009 Carolina Digital Curation Fellows announced

Oct. 27, 2008 - Based on the success of the program in the Carolina Digital Curation Fellowship's inaugural year (2007-2008), three of the project's practicum settings, University Library, Information Technology Services' Teaching and Learning Division and the Odum Institute for Research in the Social Science, provided funding to support four additional Fellows for the 2008-2009 academic year to help meet the growing digital curation challenges of their respective departments.

iConference 2009 - iSociety: research, education, engagement

Sept. 25, 2008—The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at UNC at Chapel Hill will host the fourth annual iConference on February 8 - 11, 2009 at the William and Ida Friday Continuing Education Center. With the theme, "iSociety: research, education, engagement," the conference brings together scholars and professionals who come from diverse backgrounds and shared interests in working at the nexus of people, information, and technology.

Carolina attracts world-renowned large-scale data research team; DICE group joins School of Information and Library Science

Aug. 26, 2008—The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is now home to the world-renowned Data Intensive Cyber Environments (DICE) group (formerly known as Data Intensive Computing Environments group), long of the University of California, San Diego’s  Supercomputer Center. The research team will hold appointments in Carolina’s nationally recognized School of Information and Library Science with research space in Chapel Hill’s Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI).

"Remembering what to Remember - September 11, 2001 in Fiction"

Aug. 15, 2008 - On Thursday, September 11, at 7 p.m. Dr. David Carr, author and associate professor at the School of Information and Library Science, will discuss how writers have woven the events of September 11, 2001 into their fiction in order to consider and embrace the appalling (and inspiring) human dimensions of that day.

SILS Fall '08 Orientation Information

Aug. 8, 2008—Orientation for new SILS students will be held on Monday, August 18th in Manning Hall. The day will consist of talks, information sessions, workshops, discussion panels, and will, of course, include a free lunch. After orientation is complete, the SILS Alumni Association will be hosting a recption. A full timetable of the day can be found here.

Marchionini and Pomerantz paper wins the Emerald Literati 2008 Award for Excellence

Aug. 7, 2008—Drs. Gary Marchionini, Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor,
and Jeffrey Pomerantz, Assistant Professor, have won the 2008 Outstanding Paper accolade at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence for their paper The Digital Library as Place that was published in the Journal of Documentation.

Campers use Web 2.0 technology to study botany

Aug. 6, 2008—Fourteen students from the Triangle community participated in the first BotCamp on July 31 through Aug. 2. BotCamp is part of BOT 2.0, an innovative program featuring a curriculum that weaves together four key themes – botany, environmental conservation, the use of social technologies and metadata literacy.

SILS hosts NSF-sponsored workshop on Information-Seeking Support Systems.

Aug. 5, 2008— Dr. Gary Marchionini, Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor at the School of Information and Library Science (SILS), received funding from the National Science Foundation to run a workshop devoted to stimulating progress toward better systems that support information seeking beyond the single-session, known-item searches supported by today’s search engines.

Meredith Weiss receives Zipf Fellowship

Aug. 1, 2008—The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) has awarded SILS doctoral student, Meredith Weiss, its prestigious 2008 A.R. Zipf Fellowship.

Chirag Shah wins Best Paper at ACM SIGIR '08

Aug. 1, 2008—SILS Ph.D. graduate student Shirag Shah has received the Best Paper award at the ACM SIGIR '08 Conference in Singapore. Shah co-authored the paper Algorithmic Mediation for Collaborative Exploratory Search with colleagues from FX Palo Alto Laboratory, Inc.

SAA Pease Award goes to Mary Samouelian

Aug. 1, 2008—SILS graduate Mary Samouelian (MSLS '08) has been awarded the 2008 Pease Award from the Society of American Archivists (SAA) for her Master’s paper entitled Embracing Web 2.0: Archives and the Newest Generation of Web Applications.

Scott Adams runs 700 miles across North Carolina

July 16, 2008— As he ran the steep inclines of North Carolina’s mountains to the west, across the piedmont in 100 plus degree weather, through the smoldering fires and smoke of the coastal region, it was thoughts of those who have been lost to cancer and those who continue to suffer from the disease that spurred Scott Adams on toward his goal of running nearly 700 miles across the state to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer.

DigCCurr 2009 call for participation

June 30, 2008—The School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina is pleased to announce the second digital curation curriculum symposium. DigCCurr 2009: Digital Curation Practice, Promise and Prospects is part of the Preserving Access to Our Digital Future: Building an International Digital Curation Curriculum (DigCCurr) project.

Frieda Rosenberg named Distinguished Alumna

June 26, 2008—Frieda Rosenberg (MSLS ’78) was named a 2008 Distinguished Alumna of the School of Information and Library Science during the spring commencement ceremony on May 14.

Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards presented

June 26, 2008—Three faculty members from the School of Information and Library Science received the 2008 Outstanding Teacher Awards, which were presented to them during the School’s commencement ceremony on May 11, 2008. 

Video of OCLC/Kilgour Lecture on maps and digital technologies now available

June 23, 2008 — David Rumsey, an historical map scholar and collector, presented visual "eye candy" for an audience of about 200 at the annual OCLC/Frederick G. Kilgour Lecture in Information and Library Science on March 19, 2008. The presentation, entitled, "Turning Private Collections into Public Resources Using Digital Technologies and the Internet" descirbed how he turned his private map collection, one of the largest in the U.S., into a public resource.

Summer BotCamp begins in July

June 18, 2008 — An innovative curriculum designed to recruit, educate and retain nontraditional students in the study of botanical science has been created at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  The curriculum weaves together four key themes – botany, environmental conservation, the use of social technologies and metadata literacy.

Francis Marion University dean and SILS alumnus to retire

June 3, 2008—SILS alumnus, H. Paul Dove, Jr., will retire June 30 after 33 years with Francis Marion University (FMU) Rogers Library, serving the last 25 years as its director/dean.

EPA Library celebrates Earth Day

June 3, 2008—On April 22, 2008, the library staff at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Library in Research Triangle Park, contractors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science, hosted its Annual Open House and Earth Day Celebration.  More than 285 people visited the library to enjoy demonstrations, refreshments, giveaways and the ever-popular Book Swap. 

UNC at Chapel Hill receives Clinical and Translational Science Award

May 29, 2008— The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill today announced the award of a five year grant for $61 million from the National Institute of Health (NIH). The Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) will “help speed up how scientific discoveries directly benefit patients in communities across North Carolina.” The effort includes many units across campus including the School of Information and Library Science (SILS).

NC Collaboration designated National Center of Excellence

May 22, 2008 - The North Carolina Lifelong Access Libraries Collaboration (NCCoLLE) has been designated a Center of Excellence and Innovation in the Lifelong Access Libraries Initiative of Libraries for the Future (LFF).

Summer hours announced for SILS administrative office

May 21, 2008—The School of Information and Library Science's administative office will observe summer hours through August 15, 2008. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.

Scott Adams to run across North Carolina

May 20, 2008—SILS director of Information Technology, Scott Adams, has once again put on his running shoes, this time to trek across the state of North Carolina to support the fight against cancer.

CC:ASIS&T offers inaugural program

Apr. 8, 2008—The Carolinas Chapter of the American Society of Information Science and Technology is hosting its inaugural program, "Institutional Repositories: The Great Debate," at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, in the Carolina Digital Library & Archives Facilities on the first floor of Wilson Library on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Amending the Copyright Act for the Digital Environment: A Panel Discussion

Apr. 4, 2008—A special event entitled, "Amending the Copyright Act for the Digital Environment: A Panel Discussion" will take place Friday, April 11, 2008 in 209 Manning Hall on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The discussion will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. A light reception will follow.

Dr. Duane Webster to speak at Spring Commencement

April 1, 2008—Duane E. Webster, executive director of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), will be the guest speaker at the 2008 spring commencement ceremony of the School of Information and Library Science at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

UNC and SILS relationship with YouTube offers academic video content

March 26, 2008—Since its beginnings in 2005, YouTube has been known as a major source of online video entertainment, racking up billions of visits and hosting everything from music videos to strangely hypnotic clips of laughing babies. Until recently, however, “academic” content on YouTube was mostly limited to in-depth how-tos or the occasional commencement speech.

Baker & Taylor Scholarship goes to Michael Rooney

Mar. 24, 2008—Michael Rooney, a first-year Master’s of library science student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS), has been chosen to receive the Baker & Taylor Scholarship.

Grant awarded to study health information metadata

Mar. 20, 2008—Jane Greenberg, Francis Carroll McColl Term Professor at the University of North Carolina’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS), and SILS alumna Christie Silbajoris (MSLS '00, AHIP), director of NC Health Info at UNC's Health Sciences Library, have received a grant to study the automatic maintenance of health information metadata.

Scientists from San Diego Supercomputer Center to present discussion on cyberinfrastructure

Mar. 11, 2008—Research scientists from the San Diego Super Computer Center at University of California San Diego will present the panel discussion, "Cyberinfrastructure: Transforming the World of Data Management and Curation" at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 17. The event will be held in the Pleasants Family Room of the Wilson Library on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. A reception will follow.

IMLS Announces Results at the 9th annual WebWise Conference in Miami, Fl

March 6, 2008—Institute of Museum and Library Services Director Anne-Imelda Radice released results of InterConnections: A National Study of Users and Potential Users of Online Information March 6 at the 9th annual WebWise Conference on Libraries and Museums in the Digital World in Miami. This new report offers insight into the ways people search for information in the online age, and how this impacts the ways they interact with public libraries and museums, both online and in person.

Feb. 27, 2008—David Rumsey, an historical map scholar and collector, will share how he turned his private map collection, one of the largest in the U.S., into a public resource at the second annual OCLC/Frederick G. Kilgore Lecture in Information and Library Science on Wednesday, March 19, 2008.

Feb. 26, 2008—When the University of North Carolina's School of Information and Library Science (SILS) began its dual degree program with Duke University's School of Medicine two years ago, representatives from both organizations were optimistic.

Alumnus named deputy director of John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum

Feb. 26, 2008—James "Jamie" Roth, a 2001 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science, was recently named deputy director of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, Mass.

Challenges of digital curation topic of visiting scholar

Feb. 26, 2008—On Feb. 21 and 22, Dr. Raymond J. van Diessen, senior managing consultant for IBM Global Business Services in the Netherlands, visited Chapel Hill to give two talks and interact with members of the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) community. His visit is part of the DigCCurr project, funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Feb. 22, 2008—The video recording of Dr. Siva Vaidhyanathan's presentation at the Lucile Kelling Henderson Lecture Series held on Feb. 6, 2008 on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's campus is now available.

Lisa Norberg named 2008 Marta Lange/CQ Press Award Winner

Feb. 20, 2008—Lisa Norberg, adjunct assistant professor of practice at the School of Information and Library Science and director of public services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries, has been named the 2008 recipient of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Law and Political Science Section (LPSS) Marta Lange/CQ Press Award. The award, established in 1996 by LPSS, honors an academic or law librarian who has made distinguished contributions to bibliography and information service in law or political science.

Maurice York named Distinguished Alumnus

Feb. 20, 2008—Maurice C. York ('78 MSLS) has been named a 2007 Distinguished Alumnus of the School of Information and Library Science (SILS). He received the School's prestigious, Distinguished Alumni Award during the school's winter commencement ceremony on Dec. 18, 2007. The award recognizes alumni who exhibit a strong commitment to librarianship or information science and demonstrate outstanding professional achievements at the international, national, state or local level.

Feb. 20, 2008—The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill awarded degrees to 51 students at its Winter Commencement held in the Pleasants Family Room of the Wilson Library on Dec. 16, 2007. Degrees were given to SILS students who completed their studies during either the summer or fall 2007 terms.

Jan. 17, 2008—Diane Kelly, assistant professor at the University of North Carolina's School of Information and Library Science (SILS), has been awarded an OCLC/ALISE Library and Information Science Research Grant.

LOC Bibliographic Working Group issues final report

Jan. 10, 2008—The Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control has released its final report on the future of bibliographic description in light of advances in search engine technology, the popularity of the Internet and the influx of electronic information resources. The group was chaired by Dr. José-Marie Griffiths, dean of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Vondra H. Jones appointed business manager

Jan. 10, 2008—The School of Information and Library Science is pleased to welcome Vondra Haith Jones to the position of business manager. In this role, she will handle the day-to-day financial transaction processing, as well as coordinating human resources activities for the School.

Widernet Project topic of lecture featuring Cliff Missen

Jan. 8, 2008—A project that helps developing countries improve their computer skills and digital communications will be the focus of a special lecture presented at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Monday, Feb. 4, 2008.

Ruby Dee to give MLK lecture at UNC

Jan. 7, 2008—Actor, activist and author Ruby Dee will deliver the keynote lecture for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's 27th annual Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2007 in Memorial Hall.
