Project could establish NC as leader in developing data infrastructure

Nov. 3, 2009 - An initiative that will determine how Triangle area universities access, manage and share ever-growing stores of digital data has launched with funding from the Triangle Universities Center for Advanced Studies, Inc. (TUCASI).

Scholarships awarded for BSIS major

Oct. 28, 2009 — Two $1,000 scholarships awarded for newly admitted undergraduate students have gone to Brittany Hayes and Grant Harrison. The students are entering into the Bachelor of Science in Information Science (BSIS) program at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in spring 2010.

Oct. 28, 2009 - Laurance R. Mitlin, SILS alumnus, has retired from his position as associate dean of library services at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

New book focuses on urban teens in the library

Oct. 26, 2009 - Urban Teens in the Library: Research and Practice is the title of a new book co-edited by Dr. Hughes-Hassell, SILS associate professor and Denise E. Agosto, associate professor at Drexel University.

SILS Faculty Joins University Day Procession

ASIS&T Citation Analysis Research Award goes to Cassidy Sugimoto

Oct. 14, 2009 - The 2009 Thomson Reuters Citation Analysis Research Grant from the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST) has been awarded to Cassidy Sugimoto, SILS doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for her project, "Measuring interdisciplinarity: an exploration of a novel metric applied to ILS dissertations."

EPA/NIEHS libraries internship contract extended

Oct. 6, 2009 - The School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is pleased to announce that the contract that extends the 35 year relationship between the School and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Libraries has been signed.

Helen Neighbours Diggs endowment provides for SILS library 

Oct. 6, 2009—Armed with a great love for books and an intense understanding of the importance of reading, Diggs worked with the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to establish the “Helen Neighbours Diggs Endowment for Collections Support in the School of Information and Library Science.” The initial endowment is for $21,000 with $11,000 in matching funds from the Shell Oil Company Foundation. It is intended to support the acquisition of books and materials, preservation of the books or other needs of the Library.

Oct. 2, 2009 - WWW2010, the 19th International World Wide Web conference is
coming April 26-30, 2010, at the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, N.C.

Dr. Diane Kelly Named 2009 ASIS&T Teacher of the Year

Sept. 30, 2009 - Dr. Diane Kelly, assistant professor at the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been named the American Society of Information Science & Technology's (ASIS&T) 2009 Thomas Reuters Outstanding Information Science Teacher. 

Dr. Claudia Gollop wins REMCo Roadbuilders' Award in Library Education

Sept. 30, 2009 - Dr. Claudia Gollop, associate professor at SILS, has been named the winner of the 2009 North Carolina Library Association’s (NCLA) Roundtable for Ethnic and Minority Concerns (REMCo) Roadbuilders' Award in library education.

BSIS student serves as "Chancellor for a day"

Sept. 28, 2009 - It was by no means easy—but he did it. Last spring, Garnett Matney, School of Information and Library Science (SILS) undergraduate student, had to take off more than 30 articles of clothing while sprinting wildly alongside other contestants in the first ever “Chancellor’s Chase” in order to claim his lofty prize: a day spent alongside Chancellor Thorp.

SILS research funding increases 572 percent

Sept. 3, 2009—The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill reported a record-breaking rise in research funding from 2008 to 2009 totaling $716 million for fiscal year 2009. Contributing as one of the top performers, the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) saw a 572 percent jump in funding it received from primarily government agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS).

Susan Sylvester appointed executive assistant

July 31, 2009—The School of Information and Library Science is pleased to welcome Susan Sylvester to the position of executive assistant effective Aug. 3, 2009. Sylvester is a familiar face at SILS where she has worked in the dean’s office as a temporary employee since August of 2006. She is also a SILS graduate, obtaining her MSLS in 2005.

July 22, 2009 - ibiblio, a conservancy of freely available information on the Internet based at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is a founding member of a new group aiming to promote use of open-source technology by the federal government.

May 27, 2009—Two faculty members from the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) received the 2009 Outstanding Teacher Awards, which were presented during the School’s commencement ceremony on May 10, 2009. 

Information-Seeking Support Systems report now available

May 22, 2009 - The results of a workshop devoted to stimulating progress toward better systems that support information seeking beyond the single-session, known-item searches supported by today’s search engines is now available in a report titled, "Information Seeking Support Systems, An invitational workshop sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Memorial Day Hours

May 22, 2009 - Classes will not be held and the SILS administrative office will be closed on Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day. Classes resume on Tuesday, May 26.

SILS faculty awarded grants to study H1N1 flu outbreak response

May 20, 2009—The North Carolina Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Center has announced five awards for public health preparedness efforts, including the response to the current H1N1 influenza outbreak.

Spring Commencement 2009

May 15, 2009—The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill awarded degrees to nearly 100 students at its spring commencement ceremony held in the Great Hall of the Frank Graham Porter Student Union on May 10, 2009. Degrees were given to SILS students who completed their studies during the spring 2009 term.

Lisa Norberg inducted into the Frank Porter Graham Honor Society

May 12, 2009 – School of Information and Library Science (SILS) adjunct professor of practice, Lisa Norberg, has been inducted into the Frank Porter Graham Honor Society (FPGHS). The special presentation occurred during the annual ceremony in April.

Connie Schardt elected president of MLA

May 11 - Connie Schardt, MLA, AHIP and adjunct professor of practice at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and associate director for Public Services at the Duke University Medical Center Library, is the new president of the Medical library Association (MLA).

Scientific data repository gets $2.18 million boost

May 8, 2009—A digital data repository that researchers agree has the potential to transform how science is carried out will be expanded with a $2.18 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Helen Tibbo elected vice president/president elect of SAA

April 28 - Dr. Helen Tibbo, professor at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been elected vice president/president elect of the Society of American Archivists (SAA. Tibbo will begin a one-year term as vice president of the SAA in August 2009 and will begin her presidency in August 2010.

Taming the Data Deluge: DICE Center established at UNC at Chapel Hill

April 28, 2009 — Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have launched a center that will bring together scholars and technical experts to solve the pressing problems of managing and sharing today’s deluge of digital data.  In addition to building shared collections, the Data Intensive Cyber Environments (DICE) Center supports software systems for data curation and data preservation so that today’s knowledge will be available for future generations.

Ray English named Distinguished Alumnus

April 27, 2009—Ray English (MSLS ‘77) has been named a 2009 Distinguished Alumnus of the School of Information and Library Science (SILS).

Dr. Barbara Moran to serve as interim dean

April 24, 2009 — While the search for a new dean of the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) continues, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Bernadette Gray-Little has announced that Dr. Barbara Moran has agreed to serve as interim dean effective May 1, 2009.

SILS ranked number one by U.S. News and World Report

April 24, 2009 - The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has once again been ranked number one by U.S. News and World Report in the magazine's 2010 edition of “America 's Best Graduate Schools.” The School tied for first with University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign among programs with accredited master's degrees.

April 23, 2009—Pamela Samuelson, Richard M. Sherman ’74 Distinguished Professor of Law and Information at the University of California at Berkeley and director of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, presented a talk on the Google Booksearch settlement at the annual OCLC/Frederick G. Kilgour Lecture in Information and Library Science on April 14, 2009.

April 22, 2009—Allison Long, a first-year Master's of library science student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science (SILS), has been awarded the Baker & Taylor Scholarship.

Selden Lamoureux receives Coutts Award

Apr. 22 - School of Information and Library Science alumna and adjunct professor of practice, Selden Lamoureux (MSLS ‘98), has received the Coutts Award for Innovation in Electronic Resources Management from the Collection Management and Development Section (CMDS) of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS).

Movers and Shakers: SILS Alumni recognized in the Library Journal

March 31, 2009 — Community Builders, Trendspotters and Advocates are the categories represented by three School of Information and Library Science alumni included as “Movers & Shakers” in the March 15, 2009 issue of the Library Journal.  Kim Duckett (MSLS ’01), Jason Griffey (MSLS ’04) and Pam Sessoms (MSLS ’94) were three of 51 professionals acknowledged as “the people shaping the future of libraries” for 2009.

SILS graduate students appointed as NC State University Libraries fellows

March 27, 2009—SILS graduate students Stephen Chan, Joyce Chapman and David Woodbury have been selected North Carolina State University Libraries fellows for 2009 - 2011. Their appointments, which begin this summer, are for a two-year term.

Registration opens for new digital curation institute

March 23, 2009—Registration for a new institute designed for practitioners or would be practitioners of digital curation is now open at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "DigCCurr Professional Institute: Curation Practices for the Digital Object Lifecycle" is an opportunity for digital curation practitioners to come together for a week of intensive sessions taught by international digital curation experts.

March 6 - During the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) annual conference poster session, Katherine M. March 5, 2009 - Dr. Javed Mostafa, associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science (SILS), has been appointed a Frances Carroll McColl Term Professor.

Open Position - Dean, School of Information and Library Science

Feb. 20, 2009—The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites nominations and applications for the Dean of the School of Information and Library Science. The Dean, a senior level administrator, reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor/Provost. The position is a tenured academic appointment.

Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Award goes to Xin Fu

Feb. 23, 2009—The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) graduate Xin Fu (Ph.D. '08) has been awarded the 2008 Emerald and the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) Outstanding Doctoral Research Award for his dissertation, “Evaluating sources of implicit feedback for Web search.”

Steinfirst Lecture combines with NC Literary Festival

Feb. 17, 2009—Children’s book illustrator and author Brian Pinkney is the first writer announced for the 2009 North Carolina Literary Festival, set for Sept. 10-13, 2009. Pinkney’s participation in the festival is sponsored by the Susan Steinfirst Memorial Lecture in Children’s Literature in the UNC School of Information and Library Science.
