June 11, 2004 — SILS Dean Joanne Gard Marshall and the four other members of the Special Libraries Association's Competencies Task Force are this year's winners of the Factiva Leadership Award. The task force members were honored at the annual SLA conference June 8 for their work revising the SLA competencies document.
The document provides information professionals with a set of tools for professional growth, recruitment and assessment, and is available online.
“All of the winners have demonstrated great leadership and innovation in their field,” said Alan Scott, vice president of marketing at Factiva. “The competency document shows foresight and will undoubtedly impact the actions of change-oriented information professionals as they put their knowledge to work in their organizations.”
This year was the first time the award was presented to multiple winners. The members of the task force are: Eileen Abels, a professor at the University of Maryland; Rebecca Jones, an information consultant with Dysart & Jones; John R. Latham, director of SLA 's Information Center; Dee Magnoni, director of the library at Olin College of Engineering in Massachusetts; and Marshall.
The award, sponsored by Factiva, distinguishes those who make outstanding accomplishments in the information field. It is presented to SLA members who exemplify leadership as a special librarian through excellence in personal and professional competencies. Recipients are chosen by the SLA.
