ibiblio celebrates the Dalai Lama's 69th birthday in July

June 28, 2004 — ibiblio, the public's library and digital archive, reserves the month of July to celebrate the 69th birthday of the Dalai Lama and to highlight the site's extensive resources dedicated to the people of Tibet.

ibiblio hosts over a dozen sites related to the culture and history of the Tibetan people including:

Friends of Tibet (INDIA) is an effort by individuals from all over the world to spread awareness about the unique cultural and religious identity of the Tibetan people. Friends of Tibet (INDIA) began with one member in 1999. Today, the organization includes more than 3,400 members from all over the world.

VolunteerTibet is a volunteer referral service that connects organizations of the Tibetan community with skilled volunteers. VolunteerTibet officially launched its service on December 10, 2002, commemorating the date the Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize. The service currently works with non-profit and government Tibetan organizations in India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet.

The Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) is a Tibetan non-governmental organization that investigates the human rights situation in Tibet and presents this information internationally in various forms. It also organizes educational programs and promotes the principles of democracy within the Tibetan community. TCHRD, founded in 1996, is the first Tibetan NGO to be formed with the goal of protecting and promoting the human rights of the Tibetan people.

ibiblio, a collaboration between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Center for the Public Domain, has served as a vehicle for knowledge sharing since 1992, first as an original Sun Microsystems SunSITE, then as Metalab, finally resting on the ibiblio name in 2000. ibiblio is a free and vibrant exchange of ideas among a large community of contributors who share their knowledge across disciplines. ibiblio is one of the major distribution hubs for Linux software and has been a significant supporter of Linux development efforts since its inception.

The average municipal public library receives a few hundred visitors a week. ibiblio.org averages almost 10 million information requests per day, and the contributor-maintained collections are continually expanding.
