Paul Solomon appointed interim dean
June 28, 2004 — Dr. Paul Solomon has been named interim dean of the School of Information and
Library Science, effective July 1. Solomon will serve as interim dean until a
new dean is appointed and arrives on campus.
“Paul's extensive knowledge of the school will enable us to continue our work on important initiatives such as the new building and ensure a smooth transition,” said Dean Joanne Gard Marshall. “SILS could not be in better hands.”
Solomon, who has been at SILS since 1991, is currently one of the school's associate deans.
“We are most fortunate to have his capable leadership and extensive experience during this important transition,” said Provost Robert Shelton. “I look forward to working with Paul in his new position and know that he will serve the School and the wider University community with the same dedication and devotion that he has exhibited throughout his academic career.”
Solomon's research focuses on the role of information in people's lives in order to understand how people discover information in context. He teaches SILS courses on topics including research methods, international and cross cultural perspectives, user perspectives, management and organization of information.
Solomon holds a bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University, a master's degree in business administration from the University of Washington and a master's degree and a doctorate in information and library science from the University of Maryland.
