Faculty mentors enrich summer research experience

Aug. 19, 2004 — Two students in the Summer Pre-Graduate Research Experience program were given an in-depth look at information science this summer thanks to faculty members Gary Marchionini and Stephanie Haas.

Marchionini and Haas each mentored a student in the 10-week program, which provides an on-campus research experience for minority undergraduate students and encourages them to pursue graduate studies. Students presented their research posters at the James M. Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence July 28.

Marchionini mentored Armon Burton (left), a rising junior and computer science major at N.C. A&T State University. Burton's project was "Making Video Information Accessible and Easier to Search on the WWW Through Classification."
