Henderson Lecture to focus on “Books, Bytes and Bugs”
April 29, 2005 — Trends in health care and health information that provide new opportunities for partnerships between information and library sciences and those in public health will be the focus of the annual Henderson Lecture on Wednesday, May 4, 2005.
Dr. Barbara K. Rimer, newly appointed dean of the School of Public Health starting June 1, will present a lecture entitled, “Books, Bytes and Bugs: From Information and Library Science to Public Health.” Her focus will be primarily on patients and the public within an information rich environment.
Rimer is a behavioral scientist, alumni distinguished professor at the School of Public Health and deputy director for Population Sciences at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. She previously served as the director of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences for the National Cancer Institute (NCI), one of the National Institutes of Health.
Rimer is a published author of more than 200 journal articles; a member of journal editorial boards and national scholarly and professional organizations; and vice chair of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Task Force for Community Prevention Services. She has received numerous professional awards, including the national Healthtrac Foundation's 2004 Health Education Award.
The annual Henderson Lecture was established in 1990 to honor the memory of Lucile Kelling Henderson, faculty member (1932-1960) and dean (1954-1960) of what was then known as the School of Library Science.
Previous lecturers include Dr. Fred Kilgour, a Distinguished Research Professor in the School of Information and Library Science and founder of OCLC the Online Computer Library Center; and Dr. Herbert Van de Sompel, team leader of the Digital Library Research and Prototyping Team at the Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The Henderson Lecture is a free and open program of the School of Information and Library Science. It is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room of the Wilson Library at UNC at Chapel Hill. A reception will follow the lecture in the lobby of the library.
