SILS names two new McColl Professors

Dec. 5, 2006 - Two faculty from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science (SILS) have been named Frances Carroll McColl Term Professors for 2007.

Dr. Paul Solomon, associate professor and associate dean, will begin his two-year McColl Term Professorship in January 2007. Dr. Jane Greenberg, associate professor, will start her term in July 2007.

“It is always a pleasure to recognize faculty who are achieving success in their work, especially to those who are making significant contributions to the School,” said Dr. José-Marie Griffiths, dean of SILS. “Both Paul and Jane are devoted teachers and researchers who provide outstanding service to the school.”

The McColl Professorship was established in 1997 to recognize faculty who have made notable contributions to research, teaching and service to SILS. It provides a salary supplement and funds for research and travel to a single SILS faculty member for a two-year term.

Dr. Paul Solomon

Solomon has been a part of the SILS faculty since 1991 and has served as associate dean since 2000 and as interim dean from July 1 to August 22, 2004. He has taught a number of courses at SILS, including Organization of Information, Research Methods, Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis and International and Cross-cultural Perspectives for Information Management. His research interests include social studies of information, information architecture, management of information/knowledge resources, intensive research methods.

Dr. Jane Greenberg

Greenberg joined the SILS faculty in 1999 and currently leads the SILS Metadata Research Center. She teaches courses on organizing information and metadata. Her current research focuses on metadata, classification and the Semantic Web. She is the principal investigator Memex Metadata (M2) for Student Portfolios project, sponsored by Microsoft Research and UNC's Information Technology Services, and currently serves on the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative Advisory Board.

"I am pleased with this honor," said Greenberg. "The McColl Professorship will allow me to continue with these activities and other related projects."

McColl Professorship

Hugh McColl, Jr. established the McColl Professorship in memory of his mother, Frances Carroll McColl, and sister, Frances McColl Covington. Hugh McColl said he was inspired to create the professorship by the school's needs and his mother's love of literature.

“My mother taught everyone in the family to love books, and we have prospered from having access to them and, perhaps more important, knowing where to turn to find the information we need,” McColl said.

A second McColl Term Professorship was made possible for 2005 – 2007 and 2006 - 2008 thanks to support from Bill (BSBA '55) and Sara McCoy and Duncan Smith (MSLS '80).

Current and past McColl Professors include Dr. Stephanie Haas (2005-2007), Dr. Barbara Wildemuth (2004-06), Dr. Evelyn Daniel (2002-04), Dr. Helen Tibbo (2000-02), Dr. Robert M. Losee (1998-2000) and Dr. William M. Shaw Jr. (1997-98).
