Alan Taylor, coordinator of the State Employees Combined Campaign for all 16 North Carolina campuses; Stephanie Peterson, SILS Student Services assistant manager; Lara Bailey, Student Services manager; and Devan Donaldson, SILS student coordinator of the campus-wide campaign, welcome campus faculty and staff to the kick-off.
Oct. 31, 2007 - The kick-off of UNC at Chapel Hill's campus-wide State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC) was held on October 1st in the Great Hall of the Student Union. The event featured exhibits of North Carolina charities; remarks by Chancellor James Moeser and this year's chair, Dean José-Marie Griffiths; food; prizes and the National Anthem sung by SILS student coordinator, Devan Donaldson.
With a theme of "Carolina Cares, Giving for a Brighter Tomorrow" the campaign goal is set at $850,000. The funds collected support charities across the state. The SECC is the only charitable giving program authorized for the state employee workplace.
"This great campus-wide effort helps numerous people who are in need throughout the state of North Carolina and beyond," said Griffiths in a letter to employees. "Your generous donations make a difference to the lives of those who are less fortunate."
During the kick-off, both the Chancellor and the Dean signed their pledge forms indicating their personal commitment to the campaign.
There are numerous division leaders and team captains from across campus who volunteer to help distribute and collect pledge forms. Griffiths acknowledged their involvement for a successful campaign and voiced appreciation.
"We are especially grateful to those of you who are serving as Division Leaders and Team Captains and have committed yourselves to continue to take time out of your days to assist your colleagues in exercising their human spirit to give during this campaign," said Griffiths. "I know that Carolina is a university of Good Samaritans, not just good intentions. And that’s what this campaign is about."
