Happy Birthday ibiblio!

Oct. 4, 2007 – On October 31st, ibiblio, one of the world's first online library of libraries, will celebrate its 15th anniversary.

As a way to share and support free software, ibiblio has grown to host more than 2,000 non-software related projects. From Project Gutenburg (the famous free book archive) to etree.org (where fans of tape-friendly bands share concert music); from charities and non-profits both in North Carolina and worldwide (notably those of the Tibetan government) to video documentaries of folk practice; and from educational sites to those of odd amusements, ibiblio.org typically serves more than 16 million requests for information per day.

In addition to its Web-based services, ibiblio.org is involved in Internet2 projects, 3-D environments and video archiving and supports NASA educational videos and the streaming of seven not-for-profit radio stations. ibiblio.org is also involved in free software development directly with several local projects as well as leadership in the Linux Documentation Project.

Paul Jones, director of ibiblio, conceived the site as sunsite.unc.edu with Judd Knott in 1992 just before the wide release of the World Wide Web which made the Internet as we now know it available to all.

"When we began sunsite, our vision was to help allow people to participate in the creation of their own future and success by inspiring, developing and sustaining the sharing of our common wealth of knowledge," said Jones. "That vision continually enhanced drives ibiblio today."

Several events have been planned around the anniversary including the kickoff celebration with:

Bob Young, founder of Red Hat, Lulu.com and Lulu.tv who will talk/discuss the connection between ibiblio, Open Source, Lulu, and the number 42. The event will take place in the Sonja Haynes Stone Center Room 103 on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Description
Entrepreneurs can be found in all fields of human activity, not just business. The common characteristic of Entrepreneurs, and most humans for that matter, is they eventually get tired of just listening and throwing things at the television set, or the pompous Professor at the front of the room, or their software supplier, and instead decide one day to do something about it. This explains Paul Jones and ibiblio, it explains Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds of the free-software-open-source-gnu-linux movement, and it explains Lulu. It also explains the number 42.
