DJ Spooky to present lecture/demo - world premiere of "Video Soul"
Nov. 12, 2007 — Turntables, technology and music theory will collide when Paul D. Miller, better known as DJ Spooky "That Subliminal Kid," presents a discussion/demonstration preceding his world premiere performance of "Video Soul: Wattstax to the Avant Garde."
The lecture/demo will take place on Friday, February 8 at 3 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union. The World Premiere of "Video Soul: Wattstax to the Avant Garde" will follow on Saturday evening February 9 at Duke University's Reynolds Industries Theater as part of the Duke Performances series.
During his multimedia presentation at UNC, Miller will use historical texts and rare audio and film recordings to illustrate the history of digital art and media. Using the DJ's mix as a template, he will discuss how today's artists can rearrange the cultural ideas and objects that bombard us to produce something new and expressive. Miller will also discuss technology's impact on DJ culture and the issues that arise from it, such as intellectual property rights and ownership of ideas.
Paul D. Miller's award winning Rhythm Science collection of essays (MIT Press,2004) explores the hidden connections between collage based asethetics and what Miller likes to call the "politics of perception." His lectures unpack some of the issues that modern artists face: intellectual property, ownership of ideas, and above all, how art navigates the complex culture of digital media. Miller's discussion will focus on how "sound" acts as an invisible theater where the distinction between sound art, information and digital production methods are viewed as tools for the creative spirit of the artist in a world that is rapidly becoming more and more connected in unexpected and sometimes astonishing ways.
