CC:ASIS&T offers inaugural program

April 8, 2008—The Carolinas Chapter of the American Society of Information Science and Technology is hosting its inaugural program, “Institutional Repositories: The Great Debate,” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, in the Carolina Digital Library & Archives Facilities on the first floor of Wilson Library on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The event will feature a debate between Dr. Helen Tibbo, a professor at UNC’s School of Information and Library Science, and Kevin L. Smith, the Scholarly Communications Officer at Duke University. The two will debate topics important to institutional repositories including:

The event will begin with a free dinner from Chapel Hill’s Mediterranean Deli at 6 p.m. The debate will start at 6:30 p.m.

About the speakers

Kevin L. Smith is the Scholarly Communications Officer at Duke University, providing consultation on copyright, scholarly publishing and licensing issues. He serves on the faculty of ARL’s Institute on Scholarly Communications and ALA’s Committee on Legislation Subcommittee on Intellectual Property. He writes a highly-regarded blog on scholarly communications.

Dr. Helen Tibbo is professor in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina. Her current research is in digital curation, digital preservation and curriculum development in this emerging field. She chairs the Digital Curation—Institutional Repository Committee charged by the Chancellor with developing a plan and prototype for the Institutional Repository at UNC.
