SILS welcomes Phillip M.Edwards
July 3, 2008—Phillip M. Edwards will join the faculty of the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) on Aug. 1, 2008.
Edwards comes to SILS from the University of Washington where he is currently a doctoral candidate in the information science program. He expects to defend his dissertation, Mapping scholars’ decision processes and factors that influence how they publish and distribute their work, later this year. He holds a master’s degree in information with a specialization in library and information services from the University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from University at Buffalo, State University of New York.
Prior to joining UNC at Chapel Hill, Edwards taught "Information Resources, Services and Collections," "Principles of Information Services," and "Advanced Information Services" at the University of Washington’s Information School. He also served as an instructional consultant at the Center for Instructional Development and Research, and as a teaching associate for the School’s undergraduate informatics program.
“Phillip brings a number of strengths that will be a great addition to SILS,” said Dr. José-Marie Griffiths, dean of the School. “His work in scholarly communications and collections will add critical expertise to our ongoing and planned programs and activities, and expose our students to important dimensions of the discipline and profession.”
His teaching and research interests include: scholarly communication, design and evaluation of information services, search strategies, research methods, information behavior, digital libraries, information resources in science and technology and instructional design and methods.
Edwards will teach, “Resource Selection and Evaluation” (INLS 513-002) beginning fall semester 2008.
