Director of the National Security Archive, Tom Blanton, to present "The Secrecy Hangover"

Aug. 20, 2009—Tom Blanton, director of the National Security Archive, will present "The Secrecy Hangover" at the annual Lucile Kelling Henderson Lecture hosted by the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009.
Blanton will talk about issues of government secrecy and the challenges facing the Obama administration on transparency.
A special screening of the award-winning documentary, "Secrecy" will also be shown.
The lecture will take place in the Auditorium of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus at 2 p.m. A reception will follow. The movie will be shown after the reception.

About Tom Blanton
Tom Blanton is the director of the National Security Archive at George Washington University, which won the George Polk Award in April 2000 for “piercing self-serving veils of government secrecy, guiding journalists in search for the truth, and informing us all.”
He is series editor of the Archive’s Web, CD, DVD, print and microform documentary publications totaling more than 500,000 pages obtained through the Freedom of Information Act; his books include White House E-Mail (New Press, 1995), and as co-author, The Chronology (Warner Books, 1987) on the Iran-contra affair, Litigation Under the Federal Open Government Laws (ACLU, 1993), and Atomic Audit: The Costs and Consequences of U.S. Nuclear Weapons Since 1940 (Brookings, 1998). His articles have appeared in The International Herald-Tribune, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, and many other publications.
A graduate of Bogalusa (La.) High School, he won the 1979 Newcomen Prize in history for his Harvard honors thesis, the 1996 James Madison Award Honorary Citation from the American Library Association for “defending the public’s right to know,” and the 2005 Emmy Award for television news and documentary research.
An ALA member since 1987, he is co-founder of freedominfo.org, the virtual network of international freedom of information advocates, and co-chair of the public interest coalition, OpenTheGovernment.org, among many other professional activities.
About the Lucile Kelling Henderson Lecture Series
The Lucile Kelling Henderson Lecture Series was established in 1990 to honor the memory of Lucile K. Henderson, SILS faculty member (1932-1960) and dean (1954-1960). As an excellent teacher, administrator, counselor and adviser, Henderson made many contributions to the University and to the profession. She died in 1990 at the age of 95.
