Visiting scholar from Spain focuses on information retrieval and the semantic Web

Aug. 10, 2009 - Traveling from Madrid, Spain, José Ramón Pérez Agüera has arrived at the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he will be working for the next two and half to three years in the Metadata Research Center.

Agüera is a lecturer in the Department of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence in the School of Computer Science at the University Complutense in Madrid. His research focus is on information retrieval and the semantic Web. "I'm interested in how Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing can help to improve semantic Web techniques," said Agüera.

While at SILS, he will devote his time to working on the Institute of Museum and Library Services funded, Helping Interdisciplinary Vocabulary Engineering (HIVE) project, where he will implement a vocabulary server to improve information retrieval in the DRYAD repository at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent). The team is focused on how to represent semantic information using information retrieval models.

"We are extremely pleased and honored to have José Ramón as a part of the Metadata Research Center and the HIVE project," said Dr. Jane Greenberg, professor. "He is an outstanding fit given his background and interests; and his extended stay will also allow him time to integrate with and contribute to life at SILS and UNC in general."

Agüera has a Ph.D. in computer science and a Ph.D. in information science. He holds a degree in early modern history and a Master's in information science all from the University Complutense of Madrid.

Agüera's visit is hosted by Dr. Jane Greenberg, professor and director of the Metadata Research Center at SILS.
