Dr. Claudia Gollop awarded the "Golden Sneaker" - prepares for AHA race
Sept. 18, 2009 - When the American Heart Association (AHA) holds its annual Heart Walk in Raleigh this month, Dr. Claudia Gollop, associate professor, will be among the participants.
Gollop recently received "The Golden Sneaker Award," which is presented to individuals who set special examples for others in the fight against heart disease. The Golden Sneaker Award is presented by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at the UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont, which is under the direction of Betty Matteson. Gollop was recently presented the auspicious shoe by Matteson at an awards luncheon.

Cardiac Rehab staffers, Susan Marti (left) and Debbie Quarmby (right) join Gollop as she accepts the coveted "Golden Sneaker Award." Gollop was nominated for the award by Beverly Pizza, R.N. (not shown).
“We honored Claudia for how well she has done with her goals for her health—and also for her support of the American Heart Association Heart Walk,” said Beverly Pizza, R.N. “Claudia has spoken at various AHA events about her experiences fighting the disease. She is a VIP on our Heart Walk team and has a set a goal to raise more than $500 or more this year for the Heart Walk. Claudia is an inspiration!”
Since she has experienced firsthand the significant dangers posed by heart disease, Dr. Gollop realizes the importance of raising money to support the AHA’s efforts to combat the disease through cutting-edge treatment and research. Describing herself as “one of the lucky ones” who made a successful recovery, Dr. Gollop now does everything she can to make sure others battling heart conditions have the same opportunity to fight that she did.
Dr. Gollop invites you to join her on this year’s walk, which will be held at the RBC Center in Raleigh on Sunday, September 27, 2009. If you would like to make a donation to the American Heart Association on behalf of Gollop, you can visit her Web site or contact her for more information.
