Kay Lackey appointed contracts and grants specialist

Sept. 2, 2009—Kathryn (Kay) Lackey was welcomed by the School of Information and Library Science as its contracts and grants specialist on Aug. 31, 2009. In this position, she will work closely with faculty and staff to initiate and monitor research proposals, reports and contracts while interpreting rules, regulations and processes required for each contract or grant. She will be responsible for pre-award and post-award activities, communicating with the appropriate parties on their grants and maintaining oversight of each project to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

“With today’s economy, it will be even more critical for SILS researchers to seek external funding opportunities for our projects,” said Dr. Barbara B. Moran, interim dean. “Kay’s experience with the grant process from inception to the end of a project, as well as her knowledge of UNC’s policies and procedures, is a needed and most welcomed talent. We are pleased that she has joined us.”

Prior to her arrival at SILS, Lackey worked at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Social Work where she has served as a contract administrator/accounting technician since January 2006. She has strong experience working with Principal Investigators on grant submissions, preparing grants based on specific requirements and submitting them to the appropriate funding agencies. She has initiated and monitored federal and state grants, trust funds, private foundations and gift accounts, and ensured compliance with rules and regulations. She has used her more than 25 years of accounting experience to monitor the financial aspects of contracts and grants.

Lackey has a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration/accounting from Elon University where she graduated with honors. She also attended North Carolina State University where she majored in pre-veterinary medicine.
