ALA President, Dr. Camilla Alire, to visit UNC at Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University

Oct. 27, 2009 - Dr. Camilla Alire, president of the American Library Association, will make presentations at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University campuses on Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

Dr. Alire will present, "Advancing your career through service, leadership, advocacy and diversity" at 2 p.m. in the Pleasants Assembly Room at the Wilson Library on the UNC at Chapel Hill campus. Refreshments will be provided prior to the presentation at 1:30 p.m. by the SILS Student Chapter of the American Library Association (SCALA) and the Information and Library Science Student Association (ILSSA).

Dr. Alire will also offer an evening presentation at 6:30 p.m. on November 10 at North Carolina Central University. Her talk is titled, "Who's job is it anyway? Library advocacy from the front lines." It will be held in the auditorium of the H.M. Michaux, Jr. School of Education building at 712 Cecil St. in Durham. A reception is planned for this free public event immediately following the presentation.

Dr. Alire actively serves the American Library Association (ALA) through her presidency and committee work. She currently is chair of the ALA Committee on Legislation and previous chair of other ALA committees, and she served on the ALA Council and on the ALA Executive Board. She is also a past-president of the Association for College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Alire is active in REFORMA (National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking), having served as national president and chair of several committees. She co-authored a book, Serving Latino Communities (2007) and is a strong advocate for recruiting and retaining minorities in the library profession. Hispanic Magazine named Alire as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the United States.

Along with her advocacy and outstanding record of service, Alire is involved in the field of disaster recovery for libraries, editing the volume Library Disaster Planning and Recovery Handbook (2000). She is Dean Emerita at the University of New Mexico and Colorado State University and is currently serving as Professor of Practice in the Simmons College Ph.D. program. She has served as a community college library director, head of a special library and a K-12 school librarian.
