SILS alumnus Laurance R. Mitlin retires
Oct. 28, 2009 - Laurance R. Mitlin, SILS alumnus, retired from his position as associate dean of library services at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
During 38 years of work at Winthrop University’s Dacus Library, Mitlin held a variety of positions. Beginning his career as a documents librarian, he later became assistant college librarian, associate college librarian, and eventually associate dean of library services. For nearly ten years, Mitlin also edited the South Carolina Librarian and from 1991-1994 served on the SOLINET Board of Directors.
Since his time at Dacus spanned the revolution in computing that eventually gave rise to the Internet, Mitlin’s primary focus was library automation.
In his letter of retirement Mitlin writes that upon his arrival in 1971 Dacus was “a library just beginning to feel the first tremors of the information age.” Along with his co-workers at the library, Mitlin was instrumental in using cutting-edge technology to help Dacus adapt its information services to the technological changes of the 90’s and 00’s—helping it become one of the finest libraries in the country.
“It has been my privilege to have worked with an extremely dedicated library staff in the accomplishment of advances in library services,” Mitlin writes. “Nothing would have been accomplished without the support and enthusiasm of my outstanding colleagues.”
During his retirement, Mitlin plans to help his wife, Debbie Mollycheck, J.D., with the bookkeeping for her law practice.
