New book focuses on urban teens in the library
Oct. 26, 2009 - Urban Teens in the Library: Research and Practice is the title of a new book co-edited by Dr. Hughes-Hassell, SILS associate professor and Denise E. Agosto, associate professor at Drexel University. The book, published by ALA Editions, explores the ways in which librarians in urban contexts can make library services more accessible and relevant to urban teens. The book focuses on the importance of moving beyond stereotypes in order to better serve urban teens’ information needs. Among the topics covered are social networking tools, the value of street lit, and library Web site design.
Based on research by experts who have closely studied urban teens’ information habits, and the experience of librarians who work in urban libraries, the book serves as a resource for librarians looking for ways to better connect with urban teen patrons—as well as scholars interested in new ways to conceptualize the structure and function of urban libraries as they relate to youth culture today.
The book will soon be available through the American Library Association Store. Pre-orders are now being accepted.
