Vargha nominated for SLA president-elect

Rebecca Vargha, librarian at UNC's School of Information and Library Science, has been nominated for president-elect of the Special Libraries Association's Board of Directors.

“It is truly an honor to be nominated for a leadership role in SLA ,” Vargha said. “Our organization has always been an integral part of my professional life, and I am fully committed to our members and members to be.”

The election ballots will be sent to all SLA members in January 2005, and the results will be announced in mid-March. Vargha is running against Doris Helfer, a librarian at California State University-Northridge. If elected, Vargha will take office as president-elect at the annual conference in June 2005. The office runs on a three-year cycle of president-elect, president and past-president.

“The group of candidates they have identified are truly representative of our membership and the hopeful future of our profession,” said Cindy Hill, current SLA president.

Vargha is active in several professional associations, and she served as president of the North Carolina Chapter of SLA in 1990. Before coming to SILS, she worked as a senior research specialist at Nortel Networks in Research Triangle Park. Prior to Nortel, she was a research and information analyst and library coordinator at SAS, Inc., in Cary, N.C. She began her career as an assistant librarian at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park.

Vargha holds a bachelor's degree in English from UNC and a master's degree in library science from North Carolina Central University.
