Visiting scholar to discuss data mining technology

Dr. Miles Efron, assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin and a visiting assistant professor at SILS, will discuss data mining research and technology in a May 20 lecture.

Efron's lecture, “Words, Clusters and Concepts: A Bestiary of Odd Topics Learned from Documents,” will be at 10:30 a.m. in 209 Manning Hall.

The lecture will address data mining problems and will detail several “concepts” that learning algorithms produced in service to data mining projects at SILS. By highlighting problems encountered during research, the lecture will foster discussion of new directions in data mining and encourage an appreciative skepticism of automated techniques for information organization.
