CHAPEL HILL , NC -- ibiblio (http://www.ibiblio.org), the public's library and digital archive, reserves the month of March to highlight the site's extensive international resources. Sites hosted at ibiblio take you to every corner of the globe, and featured resources provide stimulating examples of how information sharing crosses international boundaries. The Degree Confluence Project (http://www.confluence.org/index.php) is attempting to document in images every point on the planet where an integer degree of latitude and an integer degree of longitude meet; Gnawa Stories ( http://www.ibiblio.org/gnawastories ) is dedicated to the mystical Gnawa people of Morocco; the Virtual Shtetl (http://www.ibiblio.org/yiddish/) is a rich collection of Judaica resources; and sites like World Music Central (http://www.worldmusiccentral.org/) enable patrons to explore the diversity of world music and culture. You can also find including Linux distributions originating from Brazil , Vietnam , Germany and a dozen other countries around the world, and in almost every language you can imagine. These examples represent merely the tip of the iceberg of ibiblio's diverse collection of international resources. With just a click of a mouse, ibiblio allows you to travel the world with sites that are as much fun as they are educational. ibiblio, a collaboration between the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the Center for the Public Domain, has served as a vehicle for knowledge sharing since 1992, first as an original Sun Microsystems SunSITE, then as Metalab, finally resting on the ibiblio name in 2000. ibiblio is a free and vibrant exchange of ideas among a large community of contributors who share their knowledge across disciplines. ibiblio is one of the major distribution hubs for Linux software, and has been a significant supporter of Linux development efforts since its inception. The average municipal public library receives a few hundred visitors a week. ibiblio.org averages almost 10 million information requests per day, and the contributor-maintained collections are continually expanding.
