Dr. Brian Sturm, a faculty member at the School of Information and Library Science since 1998, has been promoted to associate professor.

Sturm, who has served as assistant professor, teaches courses on administration and technology for youth in public libraries, children and young adult literature and storytelling techniques. He has researched and published articles about the reading preferences of children and young adults and the ability of storytelling to entrance listeners. Sturm is currently exploring a collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Chile to create a multi-national study of children's reading and information preferences.

He is actively involved with the school, helping to bring authors and illustrators to campus for the biennial Susan Steinfirst Lecture in Children's Literature and leading the 2003 Oxford summer seminar at the Bodleian Library in England. Sturm won the SILS Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 2002 and was nominated for the UNC Distinguished Teaching Award for Post-Baccalaureate Instruction this year. In addition to his contributions to the school, he has worked with the Librarians' Association at UNC and the State Library of North Carolina to develop and present workshops on reading.

Sturm earned a bachelor's degree in French from the College of William and Mary and both a master's degree in library science and a Ph.D. in library and information science from Indiana University.
