Javed Mostafa and Saif Khairat discuss health informatics on Focus Carolina

Javed Mostafa, Director of the Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP), and CHIP core faculty member Saif Khairat were recently featured on Focus Carolina, a program on WCHL radio that highlights important research at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Mostafa discusses his work on improving information retrieval techniques to aid the decision making of scientists and practitioners in medicine and health care, and the importance of collaboration in the field. Khairat talks about the implications of electronic health records on patient safety and the usage of A.I. in optimizing the search process to limit errors from information overload.

“In Carolina, we are so lucky to have an environment where we have a wide variety of excellent programs that cover the critical aspects of this field,” Mostafa said. “We have highly ranked health care institutions and departments and programs in the school of medicine, public health, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry. But we also have very solid, very good computing and information science programs.”

Mostafa holds a joint appointment as professor with the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS) and the UNC School of Medicine. Khairat is an assistant professor at the UNC School of Nursing and a fellow with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA).
