DEGREES & PROGRAMS

MSIS/MHA and MSLS/MHA

SILS has teamed with the Department of Health Policy and Administration and UNC School of Public Health to offer dual programs of study reflecting changes in the field of public health and in society at large.

The MSIS, MSLS, and MHA degree requirements (core/required courses and number of credits) must be met by all students. The dual program student would be required to take the core courses in both HPAA and SILS. In the case of one SILS course, the content of corresponding MHA courses is similar enough to allow exemption from the SILS course:

In the case of one HPAA course, the content of a corresponding SILS course, is similar enough to allow exemption from the HPAA course, as follows:

During the second and third year, the typical dual degree student would complete courses in both the School of Information and Library Science and the School of Public Health. Across the three years, there are nine credit hours of courses in Health Policy and Administration that the MSIS/MSLS program would count toward its degree requirements. (The MHA directed electives would be approved in advance by an SILS faculty advisor for each dual degree candidate.) Of the SILS courses taken, a maximum of nine credit hours would be counted toward the MHA degree, in addition to INLS 162. This is consistent with the current practice in both programs of accepting graduate level courses taken externally, with prior approval. The UNC at Chapel Hill Graduate School allows up to 20% of degree credits to transfer in from another program, viz., 9.6 for the MSIS or MSLS, and 10.4 for the MHA.
