DEGREES & PROGRAMS

Overview

Students pursuing graduate degrees in other departments may declare a minor in information and library science as permitted by Graduate School rules.

A minor in a master's program consists of at least 9 hours of courses above those credit hours required for the major. A minor in a Ph.D. program consists of at least 15 hours of courses. None of the proposed coursework should be cross-listed in the student's home department (but this may be excepted).

Declaration of a minor in information and library science must be authorized by the SILS Director of Graduate Studies. Declaration of a minor spanning multiple fields including information and library science must also be approved by the SILS Director of Graduate Studies.

Procedure

The student, in conjunction with the major advisor, may propose the content of a minor involving information and library science courses meeting Graduate School requirements (numbered 100 or above). A student interested in a minor in information and library science should also contact the SILS Director of Graduate Studies for advising on appropriate courses given the student's interests.

Write a letter to the SILS Director of Graduate Studies, endorsed by your advisor, specifying the proposed coursework for the minor, stating how the minor will complement your major, and describing any previous experience or coursework you have had in information and library science at UNC or elsewhere. Deliver the letter to the SILS Student Services Manager.

The SILS Director of Graduate Studies will consider the proposal and inform you of the decision (usually within 2 weeks).

A negative decision may be reconsidered on presentation of further information or modifications, or a refusal can be appealed to the SILS Dean.

When SILS approves the minor, you and your advisor must then get the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies in your home department and then ensure that copies of the proposal and approvals get into your permanent records in the home department and the Graduate School.
