The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill prides itself on performing research and service that benefits the citizens of the state and the nation. At SILS, we share the University's commitment. Our faculty creates new knowledge through research that emphasizes practical use of information for the public good.
In order to improve the effectiveness of our research and service efforts, SILS seeks support for the following initiatives:
Dr. Evelyn Daniel is using technology to bring children and nature closer together. Click on the picture to read more.
Named centers of excellence ($1 Million each).
Centers of excellence
allow the School to establish itself as a leader on specific topics within the field and become a tremendous resource for our students, the field, and the public at large. Funding would be used to aid faculty research, sponsor major symposia, attract doctoral candidates to study that area of specialization, launch journals, and bring visiting professors from around the world to Chapel Hill.
Named endowed research funds ($100,000 - $150,000 each).
Endowed research funds advance the most innovative projects, provide seed money for new ventures, and allow matching funds as required by private and public grants. Private gifts are needed to enable dedicated time to work on research projects because, unlike many peer institutions, UNC at Chapel Hill provides very few paid research sabbaticals for tenured faculty members.
At the Interaction Design Lab, Professor Gary Marchionini is working to make information more accessible. Click on the picture to read more.
Lifelong-learning programs ($1,000-$75,000 for various types of seminars).
Lifelong-learning is critical in a field that is changing rapidly, constantly challenging professionals to learn new and different methods of information management with the latest technology. Through continuing education courses, SILS provides lifelong learning to its graduates and industry professionals.
