Welcome to SILS and to Chapel Hill. We are proud of our School's international reputation and our high ranking among schools of information and library science, but we are even more proud of the many people who make up the SILS community. Our students, faculty, staff, and alumni are individually exceptional and collectively singular. We study information and the technologies associated with it, but we value people, and it shows in our life-long accomplishments and collaborations.
At SILS, we are devoted to learning excellence. Our faculty continue their own learning and that of the information field through systematic and innovative research. They translate this research and passion for learning into classroom experiences for students and into solutions to real problems in a host of cultural institutions and corporate environments. Our students learn principles for information creation, management and use that will serve them for a lifetime of continued learning and they acquire the practical skills that will get them the best jobs and help them to invent novel information services. Thus, our research, teaching and service missions are unified under the rubric of knowledge discovery, management, and application that defines lifelong learning in the 21st century.
SILS serves as a lifetime learning commons that bridges personal and public realms of knowledge. We aim to create and sustain a lifetime library that students, faculty, and alums can use alone or in collaboration beyond the constraints of space and time. The SILS lifetime library aims to provide rich information experiences and services, serve as a persistent personal repository for students and alums, and insure that the SILS community has access to the best cyberinfrastructure resources throughout their lives. This vision of the lifetime library will continue to evolve in the years ahead and I look forward to your active participation.
Here at SILS, our lives are filled with engaging courses, lively debate, thoughtful speakers, exciting exhibitions and events and reflective moments inspired by a beautiful campus and surrounding region. Please explore SILS physically and virtually, and welcome to our learning community.
