Covid-19 Procedures and Masking Policies

Covid-19 Procedures and Masking Policies

The SILS Commencement Ceremony will follow UNC-Chapel Hill's current masking and Covid-19 procedures. Therefore, wearing a mask will be optional for attendees at the ceremony per the most recent masking policy made by UNC - Chapel Hill on March 7th, 2022:

Optional Mask Use

The indoor mask requirement was lifted for most of the campus on March 7, 2022.

Face masks are optional in University buildings, including:

  • Classrooms
  • Residence halls
  • Offices
  • Libraries
  • Athletic venues
  • Performance spaces

Face masks are required in all health care settings, including:

  • UNC Health
  • Campus Health
  • The University Employee Occupational Health Clinic
  • Carolina Together Testing Center
  • Student Stores Pharmacy and the Carolina Together Vaccination Clinic
  • Any patient clinics on campus
  • Chapel Hill Transit
  • University transit, including P2P, Safe Ride and U and RU buses

Research labs will revert to the mask requirements they followed pre-pandemic – masks will only be required in labs where they have always been required.

If you feel more comfortable still wearing a mask, you are free to do so. There are many reasons why a person may decide to continue to wear a mask, and we respect that choice. Conversely, students, faculty and staff should not be penalized if they do not wear a mask in their classroom or office setting where it is now optional.

If you are interested in the customized version you can order that in store or can email graduation@store.unc.edu for more information. Borrowing Graduation Regalia from SILS

SILS has a small set of regalia available for loan on a first come first serve basis. You will use the following link to reserve regalia: https://unc.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0PVhv2qNX7KslqC.  All requests must be submitted through this system by Friday, April 15, 2022 at 5pm.  The system will automatically send you a message confirming what you have reserved.  Regalia will be available for pick up beginning Monday, April 25.  Questions should be sent to silsoffice@unc.edu.

Master's Regalia: We do have more gowns than hoods and mortarboards, so you may find that we have a gown, but are out of hoods or mortarboards.  You can purchase a master's hood and mortarboard at student stores.  Everyone must purchase their own tassel at student stores. If you don't see a question about hoods or mortarboards it means that there are no more available.

Undergraduate Regalia: Includes the gown and mortarboard, you must purchase your own tassel at student stores.

Few Items to Note
Wrinkles
  • You will want to hang up the gown for a few days to help get the wrinkles out.  They've been kept in a baggie.
Return
  • Please return the gown in the same (or similar) ziploc bag.  This helps keep them organized during storage.
  • Please be sure to attach a note with your name so we can be sure who returned it.
  • Please return it within the first two weeks after graduation (no later than May 20th).

Leaving Town?
We know some folks graduate then have to leave town immediately.  If that is the case you can:

  • Give the regalia to a friend who can return it.
  • Send it back to SILS in the mail:
